Afriland Towers Inferno Horror: 10 Dead, Labour Blames Government Negligence

A tragic fire incident at the Afriland Building on Lagos Island resulted in the loss of 10 lives and left several others injured. Among the deceased were four senior staff members of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and six staff of United Capital PLC. This devastating event has drawn widespread attention and strong reactions from various stakeholders, notably the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Afriland Properties Plc, the building’s owner.
The Nigeria Labour Congress, through its acting President Comrade Prince Adewale Adeyanju, expressed profound grief over the “needless loss of lives.” In a statement released on Thursday, the union vehemently condemned what it termed “systemic negligence and state failure” as contributing factors to recurring fire outbreaks across Lagos. The NLC highlighted the fresh memory of another destructive inferno that had consumed numerous buildings, shops, and warehouses in the same Lagos Island axis just days prior, causing billions in Naira losses and compounding the economic struggles faced by Nigerians.
Accusing both corporate organizations and government agencies of negligence, the NLC asserted that these incidents were entirely avoidable. The union stated, “These fires are totally not accidents of fate. They are products of systemic rot, institutional negligence, and the reckless disregard for safety rules and human dignity that have become the hallmark of governance in Nigeria.” Furthermore, the NLC posited that the fires represent “the fire of corruption, the fire of inefficiency, the fire of collapsed institutions, and the fire of state abandonment of its fundamental duty; the protection of lives and property.”
The NLC also decried the critical lack of emergency preparedness in high-rise buildings, referencing distressing videos of workers resorting to leaping from windows to escape the inferno. The union questioned the adequacy of safety precautions in the building's design and management, as well as the training of workers for such eventualities and the existence of internal crisis management teams. Additionally, the NLC criticized the endemic nature of market fires on Lagos Island, accusing both federal and state governments of failing to implement sufficient safeguards to protect the livelihoods of struggling citizens, emphasizing that lessons from past experiences should lead to better preparedness and reduced occurrences.
Further faulting government agencies for incompetence and corruption, the NLC underscored a broader societal failure. “What does it say about a nation when its fire services are without hydrants, its emergency management agencies lack functional equipment, and its citizens are left to perish in flames because the state has abdicated its most basic responsibility to the citizenry,” the statement read, highlighting the dire state of public institutions.
In response to these tragedies, the NLC issued a series of urgent demands. These include the strengthening of fire services and emergency response agencies at all levels with modern tools, trained personnel, and transparently managed funding. The union called for mandatory enforcement of workplace and public safety standards in all corporate and commercial buildings, coupled with stiff penalties for violations. Additionally, the NLC demanded adequate compensation for all victims and their families, including medical care for the injured and support for those who lost livelihoods. Fundamentally, the NLC urged a shift from “profit-over-people governance” to a human-centered development model that prioritizes the safety, welfare, and dignity of Nigerians over the
