African Royalty Reigns: Burna Boy & Tems Make Billboard Hot 100 History
Nigerian music sensations Burna Boy and Tems have etched their names in history by becoming the first African artistes to achieve 8 entries on the prestigious Billboard Hot 100 chart. The Billboard Hot 100 serves as the definitive standard for charting the most popular songs across all genres in the United States, with rankings meticulously calculated based on sales, online streaming, and radio airplay data.
Their global impact is evident through significant collaborations, contributing to their widespread recognition. Notably, J Cole's track "Bunce Road Blues," featuring Tems and Future, made its debut on the Billboard chart at an impressive No. 34. Simultaneously, J Cole's "Only You," featuring Burna Boy, also entered the chart at No. 73, showcasing their increasing presence in the global music landscape. Burna Boy and Tems have proactively sought collaborations with foreign artists to expand their reach in the global music space.
Burna Boy's consistent success is further highlighted by his remarkable achievement as the first African artiste to have a song on the Billboard Hot 100 for six consecutive years. His entries span from "Loved By You" in 2021, "Last Last" in 2022, "SOTOTW" and "Talibans II" in 2023, "Just Like Me" and "We Pray" in 2024, "WGFT" in 2025, to "Only You" in 2026. Beyond the Hot 100, Burna Boy also holds the record for the Most Entries for an African Artiste on both the UK Singles Chart with 25 entries and the Canadian Hot 100 with 12 entries, underscoring his extensive international reach.
Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, has also experienced a meteoric rise in the music industry within a relatively short period. Her breakthrough came after being featured on Wizkid's seminal 2020 single "Essence," which soared to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 following the release of its remix version featuring Justin Bieber. Acknowledging her exceptional talent, Tems was awarded the 2025 Grammy for Best African Music Performance for her hit song "Love Me JeJe." In 2026 alone, Tems has secured 3 Billboard Hot 100 entries, a significant feat for any African artist, with songs including "Raindance," "What You Need," and "Bunce Road Blues."
