African Champions Crowned! Sundowns Conquer CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns have once again claimed the CAF Champions League title, securing their second continental crown with a 2-1 aggregate victory over AS FAR. The decisive second leg, played at the packed and hostile Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat, Morocco, saw Masandawana hold their opponents to a 1-1 draw, building on their slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Tshwane.
AS FAR began the match with fierce intensity, immediately putting Sundowns under considerable pressure. The Moroccan giants launched relentless attacks, sending crosses into the box and testing the visitors' defense. However, the South African champions displayed remarkable discipline and composure, with their back four standing firm to weather the early storm without panicking. The match truly ignited before half-time, as both sides found the net, leaving the score at 1-1 on the night. Crucially, this kept Sundowns ahead with a 2-1 aggregate lead.
The tension escalated in the second half, leading to a critical moment in the 76th minute when AS FAR was awarded a penalty. This presented the hosts with a golden opportunity to shift the momentum of the tie. However, Sundowns' captain and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, rose to the occasion, making a massive save by diving the right way to deny the penalty and preserve his team's vital advantage. Following Williams' heroic save, Miguel Cardoso’s men dug deep, exhibiting excellent game management in the closing stages. The final whistle brought forth jubilant celebrations on the pitch, marking a memorable triumph.
This victory not only adds another prestigious title to Mamelodi Sundowns' cabinet but also culminates a remarkable continental journey for the club. After an earlier stint as runners-up in 2001, Masandawana first reached the pinnacle of African club football in 2016 by lifting their inaugural CAF Champions League title. Since then, Sundowns have solidified their position as one of Africa’s most consistent footballing powerhouses, consistently reaching the quarter-finals in 2017, 2020, 2021, and 2022, as well as making it to the semi-finals in 2019, 2023, and 2024, demonstrating their sustained dominance in the competition.
