In South Sudan, the humanitarian situation remains dire, exacerbated by recent attacks on medical infrastructure. On December 3, an MSF healthcare facility in Pieri, Jonglei state, was struck during an airstrike, with teams later discovering bullet damage within the compound. While MSF staff remained safe and no community casualties were reported, similar airstrikes were witnessed in Lankien, where MSF also operates medical services. MSF is the sole healthcare provider in Pieri, and its Lankien hospital stands as the region's only advanced-level facility. This incident follows a troubling pattern observed throughout 2025, which saw the forced closure of hospitals in Old Fangak and Ulang, along with the suspension of healthcare activities in several states. Emmerson Gono of MSF voiced grave concerns about medical facilities being targeted amidst ongoing violence, urging immediate protection for healthcare personnel, patients, and vital infrastructure. Despite the formidable challenges of conflict, displacement, recurring disasters, disease outbreaks, declining international funding, and a fragile national health system, MSF continues to run one of its largest global programs in South Sudan, underscoring the critical need for sustained humanitarian support.

In a contrasting development focused on peace and stability, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) took a significant step towards resolving long-standing tensions. Their presidents, Paul Kagame and Felix Tshisekedi, signed a comprehensive peace accord and an extensive Regional Economic Integration Framework (REIF) in Washington, DC. The ceremony, hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, aimed to end decades of conflict in the region. President Trump highlighted that the agreement establishes a permanent ceasefire, provides for the disarmament of rebel groups, outlines provisions for refugees to return home, and lays a new foundation for economic prosperity. Furthermore, the United States and DR Congo cemented their partnership by agreeing to a Strategic Partnership Agreement, pledging cooperation to advance economic and resource security and promote long-term development for the mutual benefit of both nations.

However, concerns about democratic freedoms and human rights continue to shadow parts of the continent. In Tanzania, prominent activist Mange Kimambi accused the government of orchestrating the deletion of her social media accounts, which she actively used to mobilize opposition against President Samia Suluhu Hassan. While Meta confirmed the deletion of her Instagram accounts due to violations of its "recidivism policy," the Tanzanian government vehemently denied her claims, demanding proof. Authorities had previously linked Kimambi to deadly election protests that followed the disputed October 29 elections, where President Hassan secured a 98% victory after key political opponents were sidelined. Rights groups reported hundreds of casualties during the subsequent security crackdown, although the government has not released official figures. Despite international criticism, President Hassan defended the use of force and indicated her readiness to confront future protests. This situation has led the U.S. to review its relationship with Tanzania, citing growing concerns over democratic backsliding and human rights infringements.

Amidst these varied political landscapes, Namibia emerged with significant recognition for its leadership. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was honored as Africa's Political Leader of the Year by the African Leadership Magazine (ALM) Persons of the Year 2025 Awards. Additionally, Namibia's health minister, Esperance Luvindao, received the distinction of Africa's Public Health Champion of the Year. Looking to the future, Africa's burgeoning youth population is increasingly demanding a voice in global affairs, highlighting a growing generational divide. South Africa utilized its G20 presidency to unprecedentedly prioritize youth participation, giving renewed urgency to the Y20 platform. The Y20 South Africa 2025, operating under the theme "Youth for Global Progress," aimed to create avenues for young leaders to actively shape the global agenda. Levi Singh, the 25-year-old chief coordinator, underscored the absolute priority of encouraging youth participation in global events and politics, noting that this particular G20 was highly successful in conveying this crucial message. He observed that support for formal youth leadership is notably stronger in developing nations.
