Africa's Mega Trade Fair, IATF 2025, Closes with Staggering $48.3 Billion Deals and Culinary Rivalry

The 2025 Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) concluded as its most ambitious and successful edition yet, setting new benchmarks for African trade integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). According to the official report presented by Afreximbank’s Director of Trade Facilitation and Investment Promotion, Gainmore Zanamwe, the fair exceeded nearly all its targets, showcasing Africa’s growing momentum towards a unified economic future.
A remarkable 20 Heads of State and Government attended the event, demonstrating an unprecedented level of political commitment. The exhibition floor was a vibrant hub, hosting 2,148 exhibitors against an initial target of 2,000, along with 49 national pavilions and nine focus days, more than doubling initial projections. The fair also attracted participation from 132 countries and nearly 1,000 qualified buyers, far surpassing expectations. Attendance reached new heights with over 112,000 attendees, significantly exceeding the 35,000 target, a feat largely attributed to Algeria’s extensive mobilization efforts. Financially, the IATF2025 was equally impressive, with trade and investment deals worth $48.3 billion signed, surpassing the $44 billion target, with Algeria alone accounting for $11.4 billion and an additional $11.6 billion in deals still in the pipeline.
Delivering the closing remarks, Olusegun Obasanjo, Chairman of the IATF2025 Advisory Council, hailed the event in Algiers as a resounding success and a powerful demonstration of Africa’s collective ability to foster prosperity through unity and a shared vision. He praised the fair for surpassing expectations, generating vibrant exchanges, partnerships, and trade deals crucial for strengthening the continent’s economic integration. Obasanjo extended gratitude to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his government for their outstanding dedication and tireless work in hosting the week-long event, and also acknowledged the enthusiastic engagement of the Algerian people. He highlighted the pivotal roles played by Afreximbank, the AfCFTA Secretariat, and the African Union Commission as co-convenors, particularly singling out Afreximbank President Prof. Benedict Oramah for his leadership in championing African trade and integration. Obasanjo urged delegates to build on the momentum created in Algiers, emphasizing that the outcomes of IATF2025 must be a springboard for continued collaboration and the full realization of the AfCFTA’s potential.
Beyond the impressive economic figures, the IATF2025 also celebrated Africa's rich cultural and entrepreneurial diversity, exemplified by the spirited return of the Jollof Wars. This culinary showdown became a lively cultural theatre, featuring a heavyweight contest between Nigeria’s Muneera Oyiza Tahir, Ghana’s Wisdom Abiro Seidu Napa, Senegal’s Ibrahima Ndoye, and a wildcard entry, Jennifer Wolff from Suriname. Moderator Abiola Akanji of Red Dish Culinary School skillfully stoked the playful banter, making the event a captivating blend of culinary showcase and cultural expression.
In a moment of roaring applause, Chef Ibrahima Ndoye of Senegal ultimately claimed the title, proudly representing the Wolof tribe, traditionally credited with the dish's 14th-century origins. While his victory may not definitively settle the long-standing dispute among West African neighbours, it underscored the dish’s profound cultural significance. The participation of Suriname’s Jennifer Wolff, with her Caribbean interpretation of Jollof, highlighted how African flavours have influenced kitchens globally. Similarly, the entries from Ghana and Nigeria reinforced that food is deeply intertwined with national pride and identity.
As the curtains closed on both the Jollof Wars and the IATF2025, one undeniable truth emerged: Jollof is more than just a meal; it embodies heritage, identity, and shared joy on a plate. The fair, by showcasing both monumental trade achievements and vibrant cultural expressions, solidified its role as a powerful catalyst for advancing AfCFTA objectives, unlocking intra-African trade opportunities, and celebrating the continent's multifaceted diversity. It demonstrated the immense power of Africa when united towards common goals, promising a more integrated and prosperous future.
