AFCON Showdown! Morocco and Senegal Battle for Glory, Coaches Steal the Spotlight!

On Sunday night, beneath the glowing lights of Rabat, the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 will reach its climax as hosts Morocco face Senegal in a grand finale. The Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah will bear witness to a historic encounter between two of the continent's finest footballing nations, united by shared history yet fiercely competing for 90 decisive minutes to claim the continental crown.
Morocco carries the immense weight of national expectation, yearning to end a nearly five-decade wait for continental glory since their historic triumph in 1976. Buoyed by passionate home support, the Atlas Lions navigate the pressure that comes with playing at home. Head coach Walid Regragui acknowledged this, stating, "The team that naturally has the pressure is Morocco. It’s normal — we’re playing at home. For us, the key factor will be managing emotions." Morocco has displayed remarkable resilience throughout the tournament, exemplified by their semi-final victory over Nigeria via post-match penalties, where goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as a hero. Their road to the final saw them top Group A with seven points, securing wins against Zambia and Mali, a draw against Nigeria in the semi-finals, and earlier victories against Tanzania (1-0) and Cameroon (2-0) in the knockout stages.
On the opposite side, Senegal, the reigning champions from 2021, arrive with the quiet confidence of a team accustomed to major occasions. The Lions of Teranga have cultivated a culture of continuity, consistently reaching latter stages of the AFCON, making the final almost a habit. Defender Moussa Niakhaté emphasized their respect for opponents while affirming their ambition, noting, "At the end, there will be only one winner: either Morocco or us." Having surpassed their Round of 16 exit in the previous edition, Senegal has showcased pedigree, hunger, and maturity, making them formidable opponents. Their journey included topping Group D with seven points, followed by knockout stage wins against Sudan (3-1), Mali (1-0), and Egypt (1-0) in the semi-finals, sealed by a thunderous strike from Sadio Mané.
Beyond the intense rivalry on the pitch, this final marks a significant milestone: an all-African coaching battle between Morocco’s Walid Regragui and Senegal’s Pape Thiaw. This matchup guarantees that an African coach will once again lift the continent’s most coveted trophy, underscoring a seismic shift in the landscape of international football. The tournament’s semi-finals saw, for the first time in history, every remaining team led by an African mentor. This trend signifies a profound evolution, with African federations increasingly finding success by trusting local tactical minds over the traditional Eurocentric model. The last four AFCON titles have been won exclusively by African tacticians, including Emerse Faé (Ivory Coast, 2023), Aliou Cissé (Senegal, 2021), and Djamel Belmadi (Algeria, 2019). Of the 24 nations in the 2025 field, 14 were led by African head coaches, a clear demand for local leadership echoed by figures like Hossam Hassan of Egypt and Wilfred Ndidi of Nigeria.
While the focus is on local coaching talent, a parallel discussion exists regarding player development. Hossam Hassan expressed that players playing in Europe become more mature physically and tactically, advocating for more Egyptian players in European leagues despite his team reaching the semi-final with only three such exports. Similarly, South Africa's coach Hugo Broos highlighted the need for his players to be challenged in bigger competitions in Europe to bridge the gap with elite international levels. Both Mané (who rose to prominence at Liverpool) and Achraf Hakimi (of PSG) exemplify the impact of European experience on African stars, who are expected to play pivotal roles in the final.
Historically, Senegal will play in their fourth AFCON final, and Morocco their second. While Morocco lifted the trophy in 1976 under a round-robin format, this marks their first ever meeting in an AFCON final. Overall, in 31 previous encounters, Morocco holds the advantage with 18 wins to Senegal's six, with seven draws. Their last meeting was at the CHAN 2024 semi-final, which Morocco won on penalties. By the final whistle, Africa will have its champion, adding another page to the rich history of its greatest football stage, with both teams chasing a second continental crown.
