AFCON Outrage: Senegal Demands Probe After Shocking 2025 Final Reversal

A major controversy has erupted in African football following the annulment of Senegal's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory against Morocco. Despite beating Morocco 1-0 in the final match held in January, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the result, declaring Morocco the winner with a 3-0 scoreline. This unprecedented decision has sparked outrage from the Senegalese government and football federation, who are calling for an international investigation into alleged corruption within CAF.

The events leading to CAF's ruling unfolded dramatically during the final. In the 98th minute of stoppage time, with the score at 0-0, referee Jean Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a penalty after a pitchside review advised by the video assistant referee (VAR). This controversial decision came shortly after Ndala had disallowed a goal by Senegal's Ismaila Sarr. In protest of the refereeing decision, the Senegalese team, with the exception of forward Sadio Mane, walked off the pitch. After a 17-minute delay, Brahim Diaz's attempted Panenka penalty was saved by Senegal's goalkeeper. Later, Pape Gueye scored an extra-time winner, securing what was believed to be a 1-0 victory for Senegal.

However, the Moroccan Football Association (FRMF) lodged an appeal, which CAF upheld on Tuesday, leading to the annulment of Senegal's win and the award of the title to Morocco. The Senegalese government swiftly condemned CAF's decision, describing it as “unprecedented and exceptionally serious,” stemming from “a manifestly erroneous interpretation of the regulations,” and branding it “grossly illegal and deeply unjust.” They have formally called for an independent international investigation into the governing body's alleged corruption.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has vowed to challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Its secretary general, Abdoulaye Seydou Sow, characterized the decision as “unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable,” and a “breach of trust that is not based on any rule of law.” Adding to the defiant stance, several Senegalese players, including Idrissa Gueye, publicly stated their refusal to relinquish their medals, emphasizing the profound experience they shared in Rabat.

The incident has also drawn wider attention from international football authorities. The International Football Association Board (IFAB), football’s law-making authority, has opened a consultation to address situations where players leave the field in protest at refereeing decisions. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also weighed in, condemning the walk-off as “unacceptable” and asserting that such scenes “must be condemned and never repeated.” This controversy has further intensified scrutiny over officiating and VAR consistency within the tournament, with some journalists alleging favorable treatment for Morocco throughout the competition. Prior to the final, Senegal had already raised concerns about what they described as poor treatment and security issues upon their arrival in Rabat, indicating pre-existing tensions.
