AFCON 2025 Showdown: Ugandan Star's Emotional Battle Against Super Eagles Heats Up
Uganda striker Uche Ikpeazu finds himself in a deeply personal and emotionally charged situation as his team prepares to face Nigeria's Super Eagles in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group C encounter. Ikpeazu, born in London to a Nigerian father from Delta State and a Ugandan mother, openly admitted the upcoming match holds significant emotional weight due to his paternal heritage. Despite this attachment to Nigeria, his professional loyalties are firmly with Uganda, expressing his desire to secure a victory for the Cranes.
"You know, Nigeria, that's where my dad's from. Of course, there's going to be an emotional attachment, but I have an emotional attachment to Uganda as well, and I play for Uganda," Ikpeazu told reporters in Morocco. He humorously added, "I will be hoping to beat Nigeria, so dad, I am sorry. My dad is from Delta State." This sentiment underscores the internal conflict he faces, balancing familial ties with his commitment to his national team, for whom he earned his first international cap in September, scoring in a 4-0 victory over Mozambique.
The Group C clash is a must-win for Uganda to keep their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages alive. The Cranes currently sit at the bottom of the group with one point, trailing Tanzania on goal difference. For Paul Put's side, nothing less than a historic victory over the three-time champions, Nigeria, will suffice. Meanwhile, Nigeria has already secured their qualification for the Round of 16 and maintained a perfect record, holding the top spot in Group C with a game to spare. Despite their secure position, they will aim to keep their 100% record, though there is an expectation that coach Chelle may field a changed side.
Ikpeazu's recent form has been vital for Uganda, having scored a crucial equalizer against Tanzania in their 1-1 draw, a goal he described as a significant boost for the team's morale and their chances of qualifying. Reflecting on his AFCON journey, Ikpeazu highlighted the immense personal satisfaction of playing and scoring at the tournament, especially after enduring a prolonged injury setback that kept him out for nearly a year. "Playing and also scoring in the AFCON is amazing, because considering last season I was out for almost a year and I had to work extremely hard to get back," he explained, noting that playing in the Africa Cup of Nations has been a long-held dream.
When questioned about a potential goal celebration if he scores against the Super Eagles, Ikpeazu remained pragmatic, emphasizing that the team's success is paramount. "In football, sometimes your emotions get the better of you, so I don’t know," he said. "I don’t have any plans for a celebration or anything like that, but if I scored, that would be wonderful, but the most important thing is to get the three points." His focus remains firmly on helping Uganda progress beyond the group stage, stating, "I have a lot of dreams to progress into the next round. I don’t want the journey to finish; I feel like it’s just getting started."
Beyond Group C, the AFCON 2025 tournament in Morocco has already seen six nations eliminated: Botswana, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Comoros. Botswana was the first to exit, followed by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Zambia's elimination came after a heavy defeat to the hosts, while Zimbabwe and Comoros also dropped out, with the latter being the first third-placed team to fall short of the required points. This backdrop of intense competition further highlights the stakes for Uganda as they fight for their continental ambitions.
