Accra Airport Soars: Mega Expansion Promises New Car Park, Concourse & Hotel

The Ghana Airports Company Limited, as announced by Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, is embarking on an ambitious programme to expand and modernise facilities at the Accra International Airport. These significant enhancements are designed to ease congestion, provide world-class, high-end amenities, and significantly improve the overall passenger experience, positioning Ghana as a more competitive aviation hub in the region.
Work is set to commence in April on an ultra-modern concourse. This new concourse will serve as a vital connection between Terminals 2 and 3, aiming to streamline passenger movement and reduce bottlenecks. It will feature five additional passenger boarding bridges, five dedicated passenger holding areas, and bi-directional travelators to facilitate smoother transit within the terminal. Furthermore, the concourse will be equipped with five new escalators and elevators, a VIP lounge, four business lounges, and four new retail and duty-free pods, enhancing both convenience and luxury for travellers.
Complementing the concourse development, a major project to address parking deficiencies is also underway. The current car park at Terminal 3, which accommodates only 513 cars, has been deemed insufficient, frequently leading to congestion during peak hours. To rectify this, construction for a new seven-storey car park, boasting 2,000 parking bays, is scheduled to begin mid-year. This substantial increase in parking capacity will significantly benefit both passengers and visitors.
Beyond the concourse and car park, the expansion plans include an array of additional amenities. The airport will gain 4,000m² of new retail space, which will house a shopping mall and various restaurants, offering diverse options for dining and shopping. A sky-view lounge is also planned, providing an elevated vantage point for observing flight takeoffs and landings, adding a unique experience for visitors. Moreover, a new two-in-one airport hotel will be constructed, comprising a 250-room budget facility and a 120-room luxury hotel. This dual-hotel concept will cater to a wide range of travellers, including those requiring overnight stays due to grounded flights. Additional planned facilities include a conference facility and a business centre, all contributing to the airport's transformation into a modern, world-class aviation hub.
