Abducted Children's Freedom: Niger Gov Hails Rescue Efforts

The recent rescue of 100 schoolchildren abducted from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara LGA of Niger State, has been hailed as a significant positive demonstration of President Bola Tinubu’s response to Nigeria’s persistent security challenges. This sentiment was expressed by Riley Moore, a member of the United States House of Representatives, during his visit to Nigeria.

Moore’s visit followed months of intense discussions between US and Nigerian officials concerning alleged persecution of Christians in the country. Reflecting on his meeting with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, Moore noted the positive reception of US concerns and the Nigerian government's willingness to cooperate. This visit also served as a follow-up to high-level security talks held last month in Washington between Ribadu and Pete Hegseth, US Defense Secretary, which coincided with a US congressional hearing on allegations of Christian persecution in Nigeria. During that hearing, Jonathan Pratt, a senior official at the US State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs, affirmed that the State Department would collaborate with the Nigerian government on measures, including a task force, to address the alleged persecution.

In his Monday post, Moore confirmed the establishment of this joint task force, describing it as a “great example” supporting the notion that a cooperative security framework is within sight. He articulated that concrete steps and actions were discussed at length, which, if fully executed, are expected to enhance security across the country for all Nigerians, disrupt and destroy terrorist organizations in the northeast, and specifically halt the killing of Christians, particularly in the Middle Belt. Moore commended the Nigerian government and President Tinubu for the rescue, emphasizing its role in demonstrating increased responsiveness to the security situation and commitment to the emergency declaration laid out by the President. While acknowledging the clear openness on the part of the Nigerian government to work with the US, Moore stressed that this openness must translate into concrete action, affirming that while much work remains, things are moving in the right direction.

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago formally received the 100 rescued students at the Government House in Minna on Monday evening. The children were transported under heavy security in five buses belonging to the office of the National Security Adviser. Wing Commander Abdullahi Idi Hong, representing NSA Malam Nuhu Ribadu, presented the children to Governor Bago. Idi Hong detailed that the rescue operation was an intensive two-week effort carried out by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Army, and other sister security agencies in a well-coordinated manner. He assured Nigerians of the Federal government's determination to protect all communities and urged subnational governments and traditional rulers to foster partnerships to curb insecurity nationwide, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to ensuring safe schools for Nigerian children.

Speaking after receiving the children, Governor Bago expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the security agencies for the successful rescue. He remarked that the day was
