A fresh perspective on a long-standing American tradition through the eyes of a newcomer.

This year, my family and I had the privilege of volunteering on the South Pasadena Float for the 136th Rose Parade. Beyond the hands-on experience of trimming and fitting roses onto the float, the event offered me, a recent Canadian immigrant, a profound introduction to the grandeur and community spirit that defines this American tradition. The theme of this year’s parade, “The Best Day Ever,” resonated deeply with me as I navigate my new life in the U.S., symbolizing the harmony that can emerge when diverse voices come together to create something beautiful.

The experience of volunteering was incredibly fulfilling on its own. Alongside a diverse group of people—college students, parents, retirees, and others from various backgrounds—I worked to create the float, trimming roses, arranging petals, and ensuring that each flower was placed with care. What truly stood out to me was the tremendous level of collaboration that happened. Everyone worked together with a shared sense of pride and purpose, contributing their individual efforts to a cause significantly larger. This spirit of community appeared to be distinctly American: a flawless blend of personal creativity and teamwork focused on achieving a common, unified goal.

The parade was genuinely extraordinary in all aspects. Each float that moved down the street was a masterpiece, brimming with vibrant colors, intricate designs, and cultural significance. Some local traditions were honoured, while others recognized global narratives, emphasizing the multicultural spirit that defines the United States. Marching bands from across the country and international groups filled the streets with music, while equestrian units and performers added a sense of excitement and theatre. As a newcomer to the nation, I was struck by how the parade brought together elements from all over the globe, celebrating diversity while highlighting the creativity and unity of the participating communities.

In Canada, community events typically center around nature, heritage, or local appeal, highlighting a sense of subtlety and reflection. In contrast, the Rose Parade represented a more outgoing festivity of culture and community. Its magnificence, narrative, and celebratory vibe were beyond anything I had encountered previously. While observing the floats glide by, I found myself contemplating the contrasting ways our two nations commemorate and bond. The parade appeared significant, a custom that highlighted personal achievements while also bringing together numerous individuals in a collective experience of wonder and pride.

Another element that truly struck a chord with me was how the parade embodied the American value of inclusivity. The diverse aspects, ranging from global artists to parade floats themed around international ideas, fostered a feeling of connection and joy for everyone involved or observing. It seemed like a tribute to the essence of this country—a site where varied customs unite to form something remarkable.

Although I have spent just six months in the United States, the Rose Parade provided me with a deep insight into its cultural values. Helping with the float enabled me to engage personally with my new community, and witnessing the parade firsthand revealed the magnificence and happiness that characterize this American custom. This twofold viewpoint—of being both a participant and an observer—has enhanced my understanding of the teamwork and artistic imagination that bring individuals together in this place. I eagerly anticipate seizing additional chances to contribute to and honor my new community, bringing along the values of unity, pride, and collective purpose that the Rose Parade wonderfully represents.
