A Nation Weeps: Raila Odinga's Final Journey Ignites Political Earthquake in Kenya
&format=jpeg)
Kenya is immersed in national mourning as thousands gather for the state funeral service of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga. The solemn proceedings are underway at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, led by the Anglican Church of Kenya. Following the public service, Odinga will be interred in a private ceremony at his ancestral Opoda Farm, a tranquil space that has long been the epicenter of his political life. Dignitaries from across the political spectrum, alongside family and friends, are attending to eulogize a figure who profoundly shaped Kenya's progress for decades.
The journey to his final resting place has been marked by an immense outpouring of grief across the nation. In Kisumu, scenes of tears, disbelief, and anguish unfolded as Odinga made his final lap, with thousands flooding the streets, holding vigils, and participating in night processions. The sorrow was palpable, with businesses shutting doors and matatu operators suspending services as a symbolic show of respect. In strongholds like Kondele, Nyalenda, Obunga, Dunga, Kisian, and Mamboleo, residents camped overnight, lighting candles and spelling out his name, while artists composed tribute songs. Even vendors capitalized on the moment, selling portraits and Kenyan flags, showcasing the deep emotional connection many had with "Baba." In Bondo, vigils were held at his Opoda home and Kango Ka Jaramogi, where mourners knelt at his future burial site, praying and weeping, a testament to the community's profound loss.
Raila Odinga was an irreplaceable force in Kenyan politics, often described as the axis around which both the Opposition and the government defined themselves for three decades. He was an institution, a living movement, and a constant reminder that courage, conviction, and compassion could coexist. His global legacy includes being a steadfast defender of human rights, good governance, democracy, and the rule of law. The ODM Diaspora Chapter in the UK praised him as a towering statesman, courageous reformist, and tireless defender of human rights, whose leadership led to multiparty freedom, the 2010 Constitution, and devolution, empowering local communities.
Throughout his illustrious public life, Odinga endured imprisonment and persecution, including experiencing prison life at the tender age of three when visiting his grandfather Justo. His unwavering belief in dialogue, reconciliation, and peace-building extended his influence far beyond Kenya’s borders, establishing him as a continental statesman. He was known for championing the rights of the marginalized and his relentless fight for equality, accountability, and national unity. Beyond politics, Odinga was a great lover of music, with his affinity for reggae evident in his speeches, rallies, and personal moments.
In a departure from traditional elaborate Luo funerary customs, Odinga's burial will be a modest ceremony, reflecting his personal wish for simplicity and financial restraint. Elders confirmed his belief that death should not financially burden families or communities, and his will stipulated burial within 72 hours, consistent with some traditional practices. Unlike the multi-day feasts and large gatherings typical in Luo Nyanza, there will be no slaughtering of animals or large-scale cooking for mourners, emphasizing dignity and order over spectacle.
International tributes continue to pour in, underscoring Odinga's significant impact. Hon. Charles Milupi, Zambia's Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, represented President Hakainde Hichilema in conveying heartfelt condolences to the Odinga family in Karen, Nairobi. Minister Milupi hailed Odinga as a great statesman and pan-Africanist who left an indelible mark on African politics. President Hichilema lauded Odinga as a towering advocate for democracy, a fearless voice for justice, and an unwavering servant of the people, whose contributions inspired generations across the continent. As Kenya bids farewell to this political giant, the nation stands at a historic crossroads, facing a future without the man who defined its political narrative for so long.
