A$AP Rocky Ignites Fury, Blasting Drake Over UMG Lawsuit: 'What Type of S—t Is That?'

The intense rivalry between hip-hop titans Kendrick Lamar and Drake not only captivated the music world but also drew in other prominent artists, including A$AP Rocky. Rocky, who briefly exchanged jabs with Drake during the height of the feud, recently offered his reflections on the lyrical warfare and, more critically, on Drake's subsequent legal actions.
During the "6 God's" battle with Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky and Drake engaged in their own skirmishes, notably with Rocky taking a shot at Drake on Metro Boomin and Future’s "Show of Hands" and Drake retaliating on his three-part "Family Matters" diss track, primarily aimed at Lamar. However, Rocky ultimately decided to distance himself from the broader conflict. In an ELLE cover story, he explained his withdrawal, stating, “It was healthy for hip-hop. The battle was between Kendrick and Drake, not Drake and everybody else who might have said something at that time, and that’s mainly why I fell back.” This perspective highlights his view of the feud as a contained artistic contest between the primary combatants.
While acknowledging the artistic merit of the feud, Rocky expressed strong disapproval of Drake’s decision to file a defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group. This lawsuit stemmed from Drake’s claims that UMG, his longtime label, artificially inflated the success of Lamar’s Billboard Hot 100-topping track "Not Like Us." Rocky voiced his concern over the introduction of litigation into hip-hop's battle culture, remarking, “I just hate the way it’s turning out with [Drake] suing and all that. What part of the game is that? What type of s—t is that? That’s none of my business, I guess.” His comments underscore a traditionalist stance on rap beef, where disputes are settled lyrically rather than legally.
The lawsuit, filed by Drake at the top of 2025, alleges that UMG knew Lamar’s "inflammatory allegations" in "Not Like Us" were false but chose to prioritize "corporate greed over the safety and well-being of its artists." Universal Music Group, however, strongly denied these accusations in a statement to Billboard, asserting, “We have not and do not engage in defamation — against any individual.” The legal battle is ongoing, with significant developments in recent months. In August, Drake’s attorneys claimed that UMG had withheld key evidence and were actively seeking access to potentially damaging emails involving UMG CEO Lucian Grainge, particularly concerning discussions around the Grammy-winning "Not Like Us" and Kendrick Lamar’s deal with the label. The outcome of this high-profile legal challenge continues to unfold in the courts.
