4DX and ScreenX Auditoriums Post 47% Box Office Growth in North America for First Half of 2025 (EXCLUSIVE)
Box office grosses for 4DX and ScreenX auditoriums went up 47% in North America during the first six months of 2025, compared to the first half of 2024.
CJ 4DPlex, the Korea-based cinematic technology company behind the premium screens, posted $55 million in combined domestic grosses between the two formats — the company’s highest figure ever for the first half of a calendar year in North America.
The 47% uptick between the two formats far outpaces the year-over-year growth of the domestic box office at large. In the week before the end of June, overall theatrical revenues in North America were up 18% from 2024, according to Comscore.
The climb in ticket sales demonstrates the growing popularity of the unique theatrical formats. 4DX auditoriums feature motion-synchronized seats that rock, rattle and roll along with the action onscreen, plus other effects like smoke machines, powerful fans and even sprays of water. ScreenX employs multiple screens to expand movies to a panoramic, 270-degree view during select sequences of films. There are more than 435 ScreenX locations worldwide, along with over 775 4DX auditoriums.
“Audiences are clearly seeking out memorable moments they can’t replicate at home,” said Don Savant, CEO and president of CJ 4DPlex America, in a statement. “This surge in demand underscores that moviegoing is not only back, but evolving, and premium formats like 4DX and ScreenX are redefining what the theatrical experience can be.”
Universal Pictures’ “How to Train Your Dragon” live-action remake ranks as the highest-grossing 4DX release of the calendar year, with $5.2 million in grosses and an $81,000 per screen average. Additionally, Warner Bros.’ highly tactile horror revival “Final Destination Bloodlines” earned 4% of its $51.6 million domestic opening in 4DX, which accounted for just 59 screens, while Apple Studios’ rev-heavy racing thriller “F1” earned 3.5% of its $57 million debut across just 65 4DX screens.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ video game comedy “A Minecraft Movie” ranks as the highest-grossing ScreenX domestic release of 2025, earning $3.5 million in the format.
“Achieving record-breaking results in the domestic market during the first half of the year was made possible thanks to the strong collaboration with leading Hollywood filmmakers and studios who truly embraced the unique potential of 4DX and ScreenX,” said CJ 4DPlex CEO Jun Bang in a statement. “It’s been incredibly encouraging to see audiences respond to the immersive cinema experience.”
The year-over-year growth for 4DX and ScreenX continues an upward trend for consumer interest in premium large format auditoriums, which also come with increased ticket prices. Imax recently touted its own premium screens, citing the grosses of “F1” and “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” and forecasting its own record year in global grosses by the end of 2025.
