2025 ARIA Awards Deliver Shocking Twists and Unforgettable Moments!

The 2025 ARIA Awards concluded a significant year in Australian music, celebrated with a festive gathering in Sydney as the summer season commenced. While iconic international acts like AC/DC, Oasis, and Metallica have graced or are set to grace Australian stages, the night belonged to the homegrown talent, revealing a mix of anticipated triumphs, unexpected victories, and surprising omissions.
Amyl and The Sniffers emerged as a dominant force, converting four of their six nominations, including the prestigious Album of the Year for their work, "Cartoon Darkness." This achievement solidified 2025 as a pivotal year for the punk rock outfit, following Amy Taylor's acclaimed performance at Glastonbury and nominations at the Grammys and Brit Awards. Their genuine reactions and the humorous moment of bassist Gus Romer's absence during their Album of the Year acceptance further cemented their status as national treasures.
Ninajirachi, entering the awards with a leading eight nominations, also had a highly successful night, securing three trophies, including the esteemed Michael Gudinski newcomer award. Despite having released her first record eight years prior as a teenager, her wins, including the Australian Music Prize and triple j’s J Award for "I Love My Computer," mark a significant culmination of a decade-long journey.
Among the night's most inspiring moments was BARKAA's surprise win for Best Hip Hop/Rap Release with "Big Tidda" (Big Apples Music / Island Records Australia / Universal Music Australia). Beating a strong field, BARKAA's victory was met with immense audience approval. Her powerful acceptance speech highlighted the historic nature of her win as the first Aboriginal woman to claim this award, emphasizing her purpose to represent Black women and give back to the hip-hop culture that raised and saved her.
However, not all industry heavyweights saw their nominations translate into wins. Aussie rap royalty Hilltop Hoods, despite their impressive track record of six consecutive No. 1 albums and establishing an ARIA record for chart leaders by an Australian group with "Fall From The Light," couldn't add to their 10 career ARIA Awards, going home empty-handed from their five nominations.
Similarly, Royel Otis, who dominated the 2024 ARIA Awards with four wins, experienced a notable snub this year. Their four nominations, stemming from their sophomore album "Hickey" and its chart success, along with a top-ranked homegrown recording on triple j’s Hottest 100 and a Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay chart-topper, unfortunately yielded no awards on the night.
Electronic music giants RÜFÜS DU SOL also faced a surprising snub. With four nominations for their fifth studio album "Inhale / Exhale" (Rose Avenue Records / Warner Music Australasia), which continued their consistent podium finishes on the ARIA Chart, the night simply wasn't theirs. Despite their existing four career ARIA Awards and a Grammy, the 2025 ceremony did not add to their collection, even as fellow electronic artists Ninajirachi and Dom Dolla celebrated multiple wins.
