007 Race Heats Up: New Bond Writer Revealed Amid Casting Frenzy!

The search for the next James Bond continues to be a subject of intense speculation, following Daniel Craig's departure from the iconic role after his final appearance in 2021's No Time To Die. Craig, who starred as 007 in five films including Casino Royale (2006) and Skyfall (2012), recently reflected on his tenure, calling it an honour and an important part of his life.
Among the actors long-linked to the role is Taron Egerton, the 35-year-old Rocketman star. Despite previous backing from figures like Roger Moore's son Geoffrey, Egerton has expressed doubts about his suitability, stating in a recent interview with Collider that he believes he is "too messy" for the part and that it "would be wasted on me, probably." He suggested there are many cool, younger actors who would be better choices. Egerton is no stranger to the spy genre, having starred in the Kingsman film franchise.
More recently, new odds from Heart Bingo have placed British actor Callum Turner as a frontrunner. Turner, who is engaged to pop superstar Dua Lipa, garnered the highest share of positive public opinion on social media regarding his potential casting. He is known for his role as Theseus Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts series. Following Turner, other names like James Norton, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Paul Mescal, and Henry Cavill are also in contention. Industry insiders suggest that the studio and producers are interested in casting a British actor under the age of 30, which could potentially rule out some older contenders like Taylor-Johnson (35) and Cavill (42).
Beyond the casting of Bond himself, the creative direction of the franchise is taking shape under Amazon, which acquired the franchise for $1 billion. Steven Knight, the acclaimed writer behind the hit series Peaky Blinders, has been signed to pen the next James Bond film. Knight, 65, also known for SAS: Rogue Heroes and co-creating Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, aims to make the next installment "better, stronger and bolder" while preserving Bond's crucial British heritage. His appointment has been lauded by 007 experts like Matthew Field, who sees it as proof that Bond's identity will remain intact.
Joining Knight in the creative team is director Denis Villeneuve, known for Dune, alongside producers David Heyman (Harry Potter films) and Amy Pascal (Spider-Man films). This collection of creative minds is seen as ensuring the reinvention of Bond is in safe hands. Speculation also extends to the next Bond girl, with The White Lotus and Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney, 27, reportedly a favourite, backed by Amazon boss Jeff Bezos. The 26th installment of the James Bond series is anticipated for a 2028 release date.
