Zimbabwe's High-End Restaurant Embroiled in Scandal: Investor Alleges Police Collusion
YUXIN "Jessie" Zhang, an American investor, is embroiled in a significant legal and business dispute in Harare, fighting to safeguard her 50% stake in the upmarket establishment, Cosmopolitan Restaurant and Bar. Zhang alleges that her business partner, Wenjing "Vicky" Cao, is actively attempting to seize total control of the popular venue, prompting serious accusations against Cao.
According to a letter penned by Yuxin Zhang to Commissioner-General of Police, Stephen Mutamba, Cao faces grave allegations including fraud, forgery, and contempt of court. Furthermore, Zhang claims that Cao is leveraging the alleged protection of high-ranking police officers to further her agenda, suggesting that these officers are shielding Cao from due legal process. Zhang's letter to the Commissioner-General explicitly requests intervention, stating, "I respectfully request intervention to ensure these matters proceed in accordance with the law and without delay." She expresses concern that any inaction could inadvertently validate her business partner's assertions.
The legal battle has already seen notable developments, with court proceedings on March 30 being abruptly postponed. This delay occurred because police officers who were handling the case and its associated docket were reportedly recalled by a senior officer, raising questions about potential undue influence or procedural irregularities in the ongoing investigation.
Cosmopolitan Restaurant and Bar, a prominent establishment located off Chisipite Road in Alexandra Park, an area situated between Belgravia and Gunhill, holds additional significance due to its property ownership. The land upon which the restaurant and bar operates is owned by Yuxin Zhang's family trust, adding a layer of complexity to the ownership dispute. Despite her significant investment and property interest, Zhang alleges that she has been completely sidelined from the daily operations of the business, including being denied access to the restaurant and bar itself.
