Zimbabwe Mourns: Heartfelt Tributes Flood In for Beloved Ndebele Rockstar
The broadcasting community is mourning the loss of acclaimed Star FM presenter Babongile 'The Ndebele Rockstar' Sikhonjwa, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 49 in Bulawayo. Tributes have been pouring in for Sikhonjwa, who was widely celebrated for his jovial spirit, unifying presence, and unique creative approach.
Babongile Sikhonjwa joined Star FM in 2023, quickly becoming a cherished voice as the host of The After-Drive show. His impact extended beyond his on-air presence; he was known for his humility, charisma, and profound commitment to the creative arts, serving as a powerful advocate for Zimbabwe's artistic community. His show aired on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6:30 pm.
Fellow radio personalities have expressed deep sorrow and shared fond memories. Phathisani Sibanda, a close colleague, articulated his pain, stating, "Words are not enough to express the pain I feel after Babongile's death." Sibanda remembered Sikhonjwa as "always jovial and a unifier in the broadcasting circles," adding, "To me, he was more than a colleague, he was family." He emphasized the importance of cherishing every moment in life, a lesson learned from such a profound loss.
Tinashe Chikuse also conveyed the gravity of the loss, acknowledging the impact on the broadcasting fraternity. "We worked for the same company and losing a colleague is hard to take. He was a good colleague and we will miss him dearly," Chikuse remarked. Danny Lunga, known as DJ Danny, shared his grief on Facebook with a poignant "Babongile, why, why, why?", reflecting the widespread shock and sorrow among his peers and listeners.
In an official statement, Star FM conveyed its "profound sadness and heavy hearts" regarding the "untimely passing of our beloved colleague and presenter." The statement reiterated Sikhonjwa's significant contributions, highlighting his passion, charisma, and deep commitment, which made him "not only a remarkable broadcaster but also a powerful advocate for Zimbabwe's artistic community." Sikhonjwa was truly regarded as a man of the people, leaving an indelible mark on the industry and the hearts of many.
