Zambia-Uganda Alliance: Hichilema's Museveni Nod Fuels Fierce Opposition Backlash!

President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia has extended his congratulations to Uganda’s President-Elect Yoweri Kaguta Museveni following his recent re-election. In a statement released to ZNBC News by State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka, President Hichilema reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Uganda.
He also emphasized Zambia’s dedication to promoting regional peace and security, noting that these objectives would be pursued through ongoing cooperation, including active engagement in regional mechanisms such as the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).
Opposition Criticizes Zambia’s Diplomatic Move
The congratulatory message has sparked criticism from segments of the Zambian opposition, who argue that Museveni’s re-election is tainted by allegations of electoral malpractice. Reports from Ugandan opposition groups highlight concerns over voter suppression, internet shutdowns, and intimidation tactics, raising questions about the credibility of the election results.
Opposition figures contend that Zambia’s endorsement risks projecting indifference to democratic concerns in the region. They argue that the timing and tone of President Hichilema’s statement undermine Zambia’s public commitment to democratic norms, particularly as Ugandan opposition leaders continue to contest the election outcome. Some have called for a more cautious diplomatic stance, balancing state-to-state relations with a clear concern for electoral integrity.
Government Defends Diplomatic Protocol
Zambian government officials have defended the statement as standard diplomatic protocol, emphasizing that engagement, rather than isolation, is the most effective approach to maintaining stability and cooperation in the Great Lakes region.
Officials stressed that Zambia’s foreign policy priorities are rooted in dialogue and regional security, framing the congratulatory message as consistent with these long-standing principles rather than an endorsement of any domestic political controversy in Uganda.
