Zambia Powers Up: 100MW Solar Boost Lights Up National Grid!

The Maamba Solar Project, a significant initiative developed by Maamba Solar Energy Limited (MSEL), has officially commenced its commissioning phase, marking a pivotal moment for Zambia's energy sector. The project successfully injected electricity into the national grid for the first time on September 24, 2026, signaling a step forward in strengthening the country's power infrastructure and energy independence.

Strategically located in Maamba, within the Sinazongwe District of Zambia's Southern Province, the solar facility is situated alongside the existing Maamba thermal power operations. Maamba Solar Energy Limited operates as a joint venture, with ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc holding a 35 percent equity stake, while Nava Global PTE Limited, the international arm of the India-listed Nava Limited, controls the remaining 65 percent. This utility-scale solar facility represents a substantial investment of approximately US$90 million and is underpinned by a robust 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with ZESCO Limited, ensuring long-term energy supply and stability.

The Maamba Solar Project incorporates advanced technology to maximize its generation capabilities. It utilizes state-of-the-art bifacial photovoltaic modules, which are mounted on single-axis trackers. These trackers are engineered to follow the sun's path throughout the day, significantly enhancing electricity generation efficiency. Furthermore, the project includes essential dedicated infrastructure, such as a 330kV substation and comprehensive grid-interconnection facilities, vital for seamless integration into the national power network.

Kakenenwa Muyangwa, the Chief Executive Officer of ZCCM-IH, emphasized the timely and critical importance of this project. He stated that the initial power injection arrives at a crucial juncture as Zambia actively seeks to bolster its energy security and diversify its electricity generation sources. Muyangwa further highlighted that the project is poised to substantially reduce the nation's reliance on a single primary source of electricity generation, thereby strengthening the overall resilience and stability of the national grid.

The commissioning process is a meticulously planned multi-stage operation involving thorough testing and verification of various critical components. This includes the solar generation system, the sophisticated tracking systems, inverters, the medium-voltage collection network, the 330kV substation, as well as protection and control systems, metering, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), and communication systems, along with all grid-interconnection facilities. Following this comprehensive verification, the project will undergo synchronisation, reliability, and performance testing to ensure optimal functionality before it proceeds to full commercial operations.

Upon achieving full operational status, the Maamba Solar Project will add a significant 100MW of solar generation capacity to Zambia’s electricity system. This substantial contribution forms an integral part of Zambia's broader strategic efforts to expand its renewable energy generation capabilities and to effectively diversify the country’s overall energy mix, moving towards a more sustainable and secure energy future.
