YPP Clarifies Chukwu’s Exit From 2027 Presidential Race
The Young Progressives Party (YPP) clarified that its former presidential candidate, Mrs. Anita Zugwai Chukwu, voluntarily withdrew from the 2027 presidential race due to family concerns over security and campaign demands. The party denied any coercion, subsequently affirming Dr. Peter Agada as its new presidential candidate through a substitution primary. YPP emphasized its commitment to inclusion and progressive leadership.
The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has denied reports that its former presidential candidate, Anita Zugwai Chukwu, was pressured to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, insisting that her decision was voluntary.
The party said Chukwu, who was unanimously nominated at its May 30, 2026 presidential primary, formally withdrew her candidacy in a letter dated August 12 following consultations with her family.
According to the YPP, concerns over the country’s security situation and the demanding nature of presidential campaigns, including extensive travel and public appearances, influenced her decision.
Following Chukwu’s withdrawal, the party said it sought another qualified female candidate but eventually conducted a substitution primary after failing to find a suitable replacement. Dr. Peter Agada emerged as the new YPP presidential candidate at a Special Presidential Substitution Primary held on August 21, with the party describing him as a candidate capable of advancing its progressive ideals.
The YPP also rejected claims that Agada’s emergence diminished Chukwu’s contributions, commending her sacrifice while reaffirming its commitment to equal political opportunities regardless of gender.
