Yellowstone Universe Expands: Dutton Ranch Director Teases Spin-Off's 'Season 6' Feel

Director Greg Yaitanes has significantly contributed to the expanding Yellowstone universe, leaving his mark on the CBS series 'Marshals' and the upcoming Paramount+ series 'Dutton Ranch.' Yaitanes, a self-professed 'Yellowstone' fan, was drawn into the world through a three-year collaborative process with executive producer David Glasser, appreciating the opportunity to work on projects from the ground up.
'Marshals' features Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, a widowed U.S. Marshal who blends his Navy SEAL tactical training with cowboy justice in Montana. Yaitanes found Kayce to be a 'soulful character,' connecting with his journey of navigating personal struggles, particularly as a single father, a theme he could relate to from his own life. He considered the second episode of 'Marshals' to be the true pilot, a deeper dive into the series' core, following the initial episode which served as a bridge from 'Yellowstone.'
A notable aspect of 'Marshals' was the reunion of Yaitanes with actor Logan Marshall-Green, who plays Kayce's former Navy SEAL buddy, Cal. Their previous collaboration on the Cinemax series 'Quarry' was a highlight for Yaitanes, though he expressed lingering disappointment over 'Quarry' not getting a second season despite scripts being written. He praised Marshall-Green's performance and the deep bench of the 'Marshals' cast, which includes Tatanka Means, whom Yaitanes previously worked with on 'Banshee.'
The action sequences in 'Marshals' are grounded and realistic, a signature of the 'Yellowstone' universe, contrasting with the more stylized approach Yaitanes employed in 'Banshee.' He collaborated with Michael Friedman as his second unit director and utilized real Navy SEAL advisors, such as Ryan Sangster, to ensure authenticity in tactical scenarios. Yaitanes described the complex action sequence in episode two, involving horses, a shootout, and Kayce's return to horseback, as an exciting, almost 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' style segment, yet underscored by the raw, complicated reality of Kayce's vigilantism.
On 'Dutton Ranch,' Yaitanes directed episodes three and four, describing it as a 'completely different, but equally rewarding experience.' The series continues the journey of Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), offering more of a drama and soap opera feel. Yaitanes noted that 'Dutton Ranch' felt like 'Yellowstone Season 6,' maintaining a tonal similarity to the original series and benefiting from continuity with many of the original crew members. He highlighted the differences between the two spin-offs: 'Marshals' is more 'genre and guns-forward,' while 'Dutton Ranch' delves deeper into human drama and vulnerability. Yaitanes speculated that a crossover with Kayce visiting 'Dutton Ranch' would be a thrilling prospect for fans.
Beyond the 'Yellowstone' universe, Yaitanes has a diverse directing portfolio. He discussed his upcoming Apple TV series 'Lucky,' starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Drew Starkey, Annette Bening, Clifton Collins, Timothy Olyphant, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. Yaitanes, who has long admired Taylor-Joy since 'The Witch,' praised her ability to bring nuance and an 'unknowable' quality to her character. Another 'dream come true' project was directing episodes of the Prime Video series 'Spider-Noir,' starring Nicolas Cage. As a lifelong 'noir nut' and former comic book collector, Yaitanes relished the opportunity to create a series in that spirit, applauding Cage's infectious energy, professionalism, and collaborative spirit. He expressed a strong desire to return for a potential second season of 'Spider-Noir.'
Throughout his career, Yaitanes has been consistently drawn to narratives featuring 'quiet, internal men, carrying a lot and trying to navigate things with the tools they were given.' He also appreciates the portrayal of intertwined communities, such as the Amish in 'Banshee' and the reservation in 'Marshals,' which contribute to the lived-in feel of his projects. Yaitanes believes 'Marshals' can serve as an excellent entry point for new viewers to discover the broader 'Yellowstone' saga, enriching their experience while not requiring prior knowledge of the universe.
