Angel Reese Just Broke Another WNBA Record With Her 29th Double-Double
The Atlanta Dream secured an 89-81 victory over the Minnesota Lynx, with Angel Reese making WNBA history by achieving her 29th double-double of the season. Allisha Gray and Rhyne Howard also shined for the Dream, whose win halted the Lynx's eight-game road streak ahead of the FIBA World Cup break.Angel Reese had already rewritten two WNBA rebounding records this month. On Sunday, she added another one.
The Atlanta Dream forward recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds as her team beat the league-leading Minnesota Lynx 89-81, giving her 29 double-doubles this season. The Associated Press reported that Reese broke Alyssa Thomas' previous mark of 28, set in 2023.
That was enough to move her past Alyssa Thomas, who had held the WNBA's single-season record with 28 double-doubles since 2023.
And the timing makes the run even more impressive. Just six days earlier, Reese grabbed 26 rebounds against the Los Angeles Sparks, setting the WNBA record for most rebounds in a single game. The performance also pushed her past A'ja Wilson's previous single-season rebounding mark.
Now she has another record to add to the list.
Reese Is Putting Together a Remarkable Run
The 29th double-double did not come from a huge scoring night.
Reese scored 15 points, but her value to Atlanta was again most obvious on the boards. She has made rebounding one of the defining parts of her game, and it has become a major reason the Dream have remained among the league's stronger teams.
Atlanta also got plenty of help around her.
Allisha Gray scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, making six 3-pointers. Jordin Canada added 16 points and 10 assists, while Rhyne Howard finished with 16 points after taking over in the fourth quarter.
Howard scored 12 of those points in the final period, including two three-pointers that helped Atlanta shut down Minnesota's late push.
The Dream also gave DeWanna Bonner her first appearance for the team after her contract with Phoenix was bought out. She finished with seven points in 17 minutes.
Minnesota Nearly Made It Interesting
For most of the game, Atlanta had control. Minnesota did manage to make things uncomfortable late.
The Lynx put together a 13-2 run that cut the Dream's lead to seven points, giving the league leaders a chance to steal the game.
Howard's back-to-back threes came at exactly the right time for Atlanta, stopping the comeback before it could become a real threat.
Olivia Miles led Minnesota with 21 points. Kayla McBride and Napheesa Collier each scored 17, while Courtney Williams returned from a sprained right foot and added 11.
The loss ended Minnesota's eight-game road winning streak.
Still, the Lynx remain firmly in control of the standings at 31-9, while Atlanta improved to 26-14 and moved into a tie with Indiana for fourth place.
Another Record, Just Days Later
What makes Reese's latest achievement stand out is how quickly it has followed the others.
On August 24, she pulled down 26 rebounds against Los Angeles. That night, she broke the single-game rebounding record and also established a new single-season mark with her 458th rebound. She finished that game with 11 points for her 27th double-double of the season.
Six days later, she needed only two more double-doubles to take the record for herself.
Now the number is 29, and the season still has more basketball left after the FIBA World Cup break.
Reese's recent stretch has also come after plenty of discussion around her rebounding style, including the online “mebounds” criticism that followed her throughout parts of the season. Instead of slowing down, she has continued to produce numbers that are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
The latest one is particularly hard to miss.
Angel Reese now owns the WNBA's single-season double-double record.
And considering what she did to the rebounding records last week, it may not be the last piece of WNBA history she takes with her before the season ends.
