Wike Vows to Resign if Tinubu Loses FCT and Rivers in 2027

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to resign from office if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in both the FCT and Rivers State. Wike made the declaration on September 30, 2026, during an engagement with leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja, saying his continued stay in office is tied to his ability to deliver electoral support for Tinubu in the two territories.

He said that with the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, he would announce his resignation as FCT Minister on January 17 if Tinubu loses in both locations. Wike also outlined a multi-party “Rainbow Coalition” being assembled across the FCT to mobilise support for candidates backed by his political camp. He declared, “For the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” while endorsing former FCT Senator Philip Aduda for the Senate and identifying two former Area Council chairmen as the coalition’s preferred candidates for House of Representatives seats.

Wike said the coalition would operate across party lines, arguing that his political responsibility in the FCT must produce measurable electoral results. The minister repeatedly linked his position in government to his ability to deliver political results, saying, “If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here.”

He described the FCT as the territory where he currently works and Rivers State as his home state, insisting that failure to secure Tinubu’s victory in both would amount to a failure on his part. Wike’s declaration comes as he continues to mobilise support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, despite remaining a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
