Wike's Allies Fight Back As PDP Unleashes Expulsion Wave

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been embroiled in internal conflict, culminating in the formal expulsion of several key members by the faction led by National Chairman Tanimu Turaki. These individuals, including prominent figures such as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, and former governor Ayodele Fayose, were issued certificates of expulsion following a decision made at a recent national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The move was swiftly dismissed by the Nyesom Wike-led camp as the "handiwork of jesters." Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the FCT minister, characterized the expulsion as a theatrical performance intended to flatter a "clown from Bauchi," implying a political charade.
In response, Tanimu Turaki elucidated the rationale behind the party's drastic measure. Speaking after formally taking over from the former National Working Committee, Turaki emphasized that the PDP is determined to re-establish itself as Nigeria's leading opposition party. He highlighted that Nigerian law prohibits dual membership in political parties, making the formal expulsion and issuance of certificates a necessary step.
The certificates, Turaki explained, serve as definitive proof for the expelled members to present when registering with other political parties, thereby preventing any accusations of holding simultaneous party affiliations. This initiative also aims to officially inform critical institutions, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, that these individuals are no longer affiliated with the PDP.
A list of the eleven individuals who received expulsion certificates includes Nyesom Wike, Ayodele Fayose, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Umaru Bature, Kamarudeen Ajibade, Abdurahman Muhammad, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Mr Austin Nwachukwu, Abraham Amah Nnanna, George Turna, and Chief Dan Orbih. Turaki affirmed that "They have been expelled. They remain expelled. We have now certified their expulsion, and these certificates have been sent to them."
Looking ahead, Turaki announced that the party would soon issue "proper disclaimers" to the public, warning society members that engaging in business with the expelled individuals henceforth would be at their own risk, as they no longer represent the People's Democratic Party. He expressed hope that this decisive action would rid the party of the "cankerworms" that have hindered its activities and created internal problems.
The PDP, under Turaki's leadership, aims to provide a "credible alternative" and "credible leadership" to Nigerians, with an eye towards the 2027 general elections. The expulsion is framed as a crucial step towards party rejuvenation and preparation for its role as a robust opposition force.
