Wicknell Chivayo's Shocking Demise: Billionaire's Death Sparks KSh1.5 Trillion Scandal Linked to Kenyan President

A tragic helicopter crash near Marondera, Zimbabwe, claimed the lives of prominent Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke, and three other individuals on board. The incident, which occurred at Kudenga Farm near Waddilove Mission at approximately 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, involved a Bell 430 helicopter returning to Harare from Chivayo’s rural homestead in Gandami, Chikomba. Details emerging from the final radio communications suggest that the pilot, Captain Kelvin Tafirei Soda, struggled with severe weather conditions and poor visibility shortly before the aircraft went down.

According to Froster Chisi, Chivayo’s senior security aide who was traveling in a second helicopter flying nearby, weather conditions deteriorated significantly as the two aircraft approached Marondera. Captain Soda and co-pilot Captain Courage Mutavirwa encountered heavy rain and dense mist. Chisi recounted Captain Soda’s desperate radio communication: “I’m in bad weather; I haven’t exited the cloud.” The pilot of the second helicopter suggested diverting course due to the conditions, and as they landed in Marondera, they initially expected Chivayo’s aircraft to arrive later. After an anxious wait and failed attempts to contact those on board, they learned of the devastating crash. Captain Soda’s last reported position was over the Surrey area, with his final exchange indicating confusion about the destination when asked, “Which destination?” by the other pilot.

Authorities, including the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police, immediately commenced investigations into the crash. CAAZ director-general George Mashababe noted preliminary observations indicated fuel spilled upon impact, leading to a fire that consumed the surrounding grass. A flight recorder has been recovered from the wreckage, which investigators plan to meticulously examine, alongside radio communications, prevailing weather conditions, and the wreckage itself, to reconstruct the aircraft’s final moments and determine the exact cause. While the radio exchanges clearly describe the perilous conditions faced by the pilots, authorities have not yet concluded that bad weather or spatial disorientation directly caused the crash, emphasizing that investigations are ongoing.

Wicknell Chivayo, 43, was a well-known figure in Zimbabwe, the founder of Intratrek Zimbabwe, and had built a public profile through significant energy and infrastructure contracts, including the long-delayed 100-megawatt Gwanda solar project. He was also recognized for high-profile gifts and was a political ally of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who accorded him provincial hero status, an honor that covers funeral costs and provides an official send-off. Chivayo, born on November 22, 1982, had faced various fraud charges over the years, which consistently resulted in acquittals or dismissals. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Muteke, 35, who also perished in the crash, along with her personal aide Senelisiwe Magagula, and the two pilots.

The remains of the victims were taken to Doves Funeral Services for identification, and due to their condition after the impact and fire, there was to be no public viewing. Chivayo is expected to be buried at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare, while Captain Soda is scheduled for burial in Marondera. The tragic incident, however, has been further complicated by explosive allegations made by former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Speaking in the United States, Gachagua claimed that Chivayo was a close associate of Kenyan President William Ruto and was allegedly involved in holding and moving over KSh1.5 trillion on Ruto’s behalf. Gachagua suggested that Chivayo’s death has created significant uncertainty regarding these alleged funds. These claims have intensified political debate and garnered attention across Southern Africa, though Gachagua has not provided public evidence to substantiate his allegations, and they remain unproven.
