Wicked Stars Cynthia Erivo & Ariana Grande Reveal Harrowing Red Carpet Journey

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have openly discussed the significant challenges they've encountered while promoting "Wicked: For Good," the much-anticipated second chapter of Jon M. Chu's two-part adaptation of the Broadway blockbuster. Speaking at a Screen Actors Guild NomCom consideration screening, Erivo starkly stated, "We have come through some shit," highlighting the intense pressures, including recent events. This comes after a notable incident at the film's Singapore premiere where Erivo intervened to protect Grande from an intruder who jumped a barricade and rushed toward her on the yellow brick carpet. Video footage showed Erivo physically pushing the man away before security removed him, with co-star Michelle Yeoh also providing comfort to Grande after the arrest and charging of the individual.
During an emotional Q&A session moderated by Variety, alongside fellow cast members Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Marissa Bode, both actresses delved into how their iconic roles as Elphaba and Glinda have profoundly transformed them as artists and individuals. Erivo, who portrays Elphaba, reflected on her personal connection to the story, recalling how, at 20, as a drama school student, she found solace in the music of "Wicked" even before seeing the stage production. She eventually attended the musical for her 25th birthday, realizing she was now part of the very world that once provided her comfort. The role compelled Erivo to confront personal fears and experiences she had previously avoided, particularly those related to perceptions of beauty, feelings of loneliness, and loss.
Ariana Grande, portraying Glinda, became visibly emotional as she shared how the role reconnected her to her craft after a period of feeling disconnected. Through tears, Grande expressed that it "felt safe again to fall in love with creating," suggesting that she felt truly seen for the first time in a long while. She also conveyed a sense of relief that audiences would finally witness and understand the full complexity of Glinda's character in the second film, allowing them to "love Glinda the way that I had to play her."
Both stars emphatically underscored the enduring impact of their collaboration and the unique bond formed on set. Erivo praised director Jon M. Chu and the entire ensemble cast for fostering an unusually close-knit family atmosphere, noting that such deep connections are rare in filmmaking. Grande echoed this sentiment, describing Erivo as "a lifelong sister" and their partnership as "absolutely the greatest gift of my life." When questioned about bidding farewell to their characters, Grande suggested that the journey is far from over, playfully referencing Cher's numerous farewell tours. She concluded by stating that these characters "will be a part of our hearts always. They’ve changed our lives irrevocably and permanently."
"Wicked: For Good" continues the narrative of Elphaba and Glinda as they navigate their evolving friendship, the complexities of power, personal sacrifice, and the intricate mythology that solidifies their respective legacies as villain and hero. The film is already garnering significant attention as a top Oscar contender for the upcoming awards season, with many predicting consecutive nominations for both Erivo and Grande. Their off-screen partnership and shared experiences demonstrate a bond as formidable as the magic wielded by the witches of Oz themselves.
