Western Legend Roger Ewing Dies at 83, Leaving Enduring Legacy

Roger Ewing, the actor best known for his portrayal of deputy marshal Thad Greenwood on the legendary CBS western Gunsmoke, passed away on December 18, 2023, at the age of 83. His family, based in Morro Bay, California, announced his death on a Friday afternoon, just weeks before what would have been his 84th birthday on January 12, 1942. Born in Los Angeles, Ewing’s journey to the world of Gunsmoke seemed almost destined from a young age.
Ewing’s fascination with Gunsmoke began in his teenage years. As a high school senior, he performed in a variety show that satirized the series, stepping into the shoes of Dennis Weaver’s beloved character, Chester. After completing a year of college and working as a lifeguard, Ewing decided to pursue acting professionally. His career began with an uncredited role in the 1964 film Ensign Pulver, followed by appearances on television staples such as Bewitched, The Bing Crosby Show, and The Baileys of Balboa.
His entry into Dodge City, Kansas—the fictional home of Gunsmoke—came in February 1965, when he appeared in a one-off role as Ben Lukens at just 23 years old. Ewing’s initial performances impressed the producers and paved the way for his later casting as deputy Thad Greenwood, a role that would cement his place in the hearts of western fans and television history.
Over the years, Ewing became synonymous with Thad Greenwood, bringing youthful energy, charm, and integrity to a character that became a cornerstone of the long-running series. His work on Gunsmoke contributed to the show’s enduring legacy as one of television’s most iconic westerns.
Roger Ewing’s career extended beyond Gunsmoke, but it was his work in Dodge City that remains most celebrated. He is remembered for his dedication to the craft, his warm presence on screen, and his ability to capture the spirit of the American West for generations of viewers.
He is survived by his family, who have honored his memory and celebrated his contributions to television history.
