Wemby's Historic Playoff Debut: Rookie Smashes Records with 35-Point Explosion!

Victor Wembanyama made a historic postseason debut, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 111-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1 of their first-round Western Conference playoff series. Wembanyama scored a game-high 35 points, thrilling the fiesta-clad crowd at Frost Bank Center and securing the Spurs' first playoff win in seven years.
The French phenom's performance set a new franchise record for the highest scoring output by a Spur in a postseason debut, surpassing Hall of Famer Tim Duncan's previous mark of 32 points. Wembanyama also became the first player in NBA history to score 35 points or more in his postseason debut while connecting on at least five 3-pointers. He shot an efficient 13-of-21 from the field, including an impressive 5-of-6 from 3-point range, and added five rebounds and two blocks.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson expressed confidence in Wembanyama's readiness, noting the young player's desire to meet heightened expectations for preparation, detail, competitiveness, and physicality. Johnson highlighted Wembanyama's ability to settle in and quarterback the defense, despite Portland's efforts to create confusion with multiple actions.
Wembanyama faced a total of eight different defenders over 33 minutes, consistently scoring against them. His defensive presence was equally impactful, as he held Portland scoreless on 11 attempts when he was the contesting defender. The young star acknowledged the different atmosphere of the playoffs, feeling the heightened excitement from both fans and his team, and appreciated the extended preparation time.
Despite Wembanyama's dominant performance, Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija also had a strong playoff debut, finishing with a team-high 30 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Avdija became the first player in Portland franchise history to achieve such a stat line in a playoff game.
Wembanyama started the game strong, sinking four of his first six shots and accumulating 21 points by halftime, helping the Spurs to a 59-49 lead. Although Portland initiated the second half with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to two, the Blazers were unable to get any closer. Wembanyama sealed the victory with a 14-point fourth quarter, as Spurs legends Tim Duncan and David Robinson watched from courtside, their presence acknowledged by the roaring sellout crowd of 19,372.
The Spurs improved their impressive home playoff record against the Trail Blazers to 11-0, marking the best home record by any team in the NBA against a single franchise. Looking ahead to Game 2, Wembanyama anticipates increased attention and physicality from the Trail Blazers, stating, "It's their identity. It's something to be expected, and it's also to be expected that they'll double up on that in the next games. But we're ready."
