Victoria Beckham Unveils Raw Truths: Docuseries Director Reveals Spice Girl's 'Difficult' Journey, Eating Disorder Battles

The new three-part Netflix docuseries, "Victoria Beckham," directed by "Becoming" filmmaker Nadia Hallgren, offers an unprecedented and deeply revealing look into the life and career of the Spice Girl turned football WAG turned fashion mogul. Streaming now, the series not only chronicles Victoria’s most ambitious fashion show to date in Paris but also delves into the complex journey of her ever-evolving career, marked by significant personal and professional ups and downs. Featuring raw and honest interviews with Victoria and David Beckham, as well as fashion icons like Anna Wintour and Tom Ford, the series aims to portray Posh Spice in a light viewers have never seen before, challenging her public image of an unsmiling demeanor by showcasing her humor and candor.
The docuseries begins with Victoria’s early life, revealing that Posh Spice wasn't always popular. She describes herself as "that uncool kid at school that’s awkward" and a "loner" who was bullied. Her only escape was through performing arts, where she could become someone else, as she "didn’t really want to be me." Even after attending theater school, she faced criticism about her appearance and weight. Her life dramatically shifted with an audition for the Spice Girls, where she sang "Mein Herr" from "Cabaret," leading to overnight fame.
However, the transition after the Spice Girls disbanded in 2000 was "really difficult." As a new wife to David Beckham and mother to Brooklyn, Victoria found herself in a flat in Manchester, far from family and friends. This period felt "slow" and "lonely," leading to intense self-consciousness and public backlash. "People thought I was that miserable cow that never smiled," she admits, reflecting on how accurate that perception was at the time.
During her "WAG era" when David played for Real Madrid, Victoria consciously leaned into an "attention-seeking" style. She acknowledges that this was a period of creative unfulfillment, a way to remain relevant and to find her identity. It was then that she turned to fashion, a path that was initially met with skepticism from the industry. Designer Tom Ford questioned her motives, and the chances of her brand succeeding were considered "very slim." However, Victoria was fueled by this doubt, debuting her first collection of 10 dresses in a hotel suite in 2008 without celebrity fanfare.
Before fully immersing herself in fashion, Victoria participated in a Spice Girls reunion tour in 2008. While it was enjoyable to be with her former bandmates, a comment from Mel B – "Don’t forget where you’ve come from" – upset her, as Victoria insists she has never forgotten Posh Spice's foundational role. This tour solidified her realization that she no longer belonged on stage, prompting her to "kill the WAG" persona, simplify her image, and focus intently on her new career.
The series also delves into Victoria’s deeply personal battle with disordered eating, a struggle that worsened after Brooklyn’s birth. She recounts being publicly weighed on national television and facing constant scrutiny over her body. This led to a distorted self-image, where she "lost all sense of reality" and used weight control as a coping mechanism. She never discussed it publicly or with her parents, highlighting the profound impact of constant criticism on her self-worth, which still affects her public demeanor today, causing her to put up a "barrier" and an "armor" whenever a camera appears.
Victoria’s fashion brand faced immense financial challenges, at one point being "tens of millions in the red" by 2016. David Beckham, a significant investor, expressed panic, deeming the business unsustainable. Victoria felt "embarrassed" and "desperate" to save what she had built, enduring a "dark, dark time" where she cried daily. She eventually brought in David Belhassen of NEO Investment Partners, who described the situation as a "disaster," citing extravagant expenses like $70,000 annually for office plants and a $15,000 gardener. Victoria admits to allowing this due to the "power of celebrity" and people being afraid to tell her "no," acknowledging she had "lost my way" and was in significant debt.
The docuseries culminates in Victoria’s pivotal Paris Fashion Week show, an event that symbolizes her perseverance. Despite a torrential downpour threatening to derail the show, Victoria declared, "Fuck this. We’re doing this show, no matter what." The rain miraculously stopped, leading to a successful presentation with Gigi Hadid closing in an emerald gown. Anna Wintour, initially skeptical, was profoundly impressed, noting that Victoria "totally proved us wrong" and felt that night she was truly achieving her dreams.
Nadia Hallgren, the director, approached the project by prioritizing authentic storytelling, building trust with Victoria, and gently pushing her out of her comfort zone. Hallgren intentionally excluded certain narratives, such as David’s alleged infidelities or the rumored Brooklyn Beckham family feud, to focus solely on Victoria’s personal evolution and self-discovery. This approach ensured that the series remained centered on Victoria's journey without contrived moments. Hallgren also noted Victoria’s incredible humor and resilience, drawing surprising parallels between Victoria and Michelle Obama as fiercely driven women navigating public life shaped by their charismatic husbands. Victoria, who initially had to be persuaded to do the documentary, ultimately embraced the process, willing to be vulnerable and allowing filming without restrictions or final editorial control.
The series concludes with Victoria affirming her unwavering ambition, refusing to rest on her laurels. Despite David reassuring her she has nothing to prove, Victoria insists on continuing to fight and build, especially after the immense financial and personal struggles. She expresses profound pride in her accomplishments and declares, "I’m not stopping yet," hoping that audiences will come away with a deeper understanding of her warmth, kindness, resilience, intelligence, and unwavering fighting spirit.
