Varsity Cup Showdown: UP-Tuks and NWU Eagles Gear Up for Epic 2026 Final

The 2026 Varsity Cup final is set to be a thrilling conclusion to another memorable season, with UP-Tuks securing a home spot against the NWU Eagles.
Both teams delivered dominant performances in their respective semi-final clashes on Monday, ensuring their places in the championship match, which will take place next Monday, April 13th, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00.
In the Gauteng derby, UP-Tuks, also known as the Stripe Generation, overpowered their city rivals UJ with a commanding 53-34 victory to book their home final at the Tuks Stadium.
Welcoming UJ for a high-stakes semi-final, UP-Tuks, on a quest for their sixth title, rose to the occasion emphatically.
Despite the Tuks stadium being packed, it was the Orange Army of UJ who drew first blood, with Jeandre Uithaler setting up Tholithemba Sibisi for the opening try.
UJ's physical contention saw them reduced to 14 men, allowing Tuks to capitalize through relentless attacks, culminating in Munashe Dukuswa's try to level matters.
JT Kapank then redeemed himself with a successful penalty, giving UJ the lead for the second time.
However, lack of discipline from UJ led to Coun-Lee Koekman being sent to the sin bin, and Tuks capitalized once more, with Divan du Toit's sharp boot leveling matters at eight-all on the stroke of halftime.
UJ started the second half strongly, with skipper Kamo Molefe crossing over from a maul to extend their lead. However, Tuks responded swiftly with a try from Kobus Janse van Rensburg.
Akha Mjawule then sliced through the Tuks defence, allowing UJ to take the lead for the first time in the encounter, with both Kapank and du Toit adding extras. Tuks then unleashed their "bomb squad" as UJ was once more reduced to 14 men, which instantly paid off as Jean Fourie powered over the line to extend Tuks' lead.
Du Toit further cemented Tuks' advantage from the tee before Dukuswa completed his brace, sealing the impressive victory.
Meanwhile, the NWU Eagles turned on the style in the second half of their semi-final clash, cruising to a commanding 50-10 victory over Maties at the Fanie du Toit Sports Ground in Potchefstroom.
In front of a sold-out home crowd, the Eagles redeemed themselves after earlier season disappointments against Maties with a clinical and ruthless performance.
The first half was tightly contested, ending 10-10 after each side scored a try and a penalty. A setback occurred for the Eagles when veteran Matthew Fortuin was forced off due to injury.
However, the hosts returned from halftime with renewed intent, striking three tries within the opening 18 minutes to take control.
Their tempo, physicality, and precision proved overwhelming for Maties, who struggled to penetrate the Eagles' resolute defence.
With momentum fully on their side, NWU dominated the closing stages, running in tries at will and completely shutting Maties out in the second half.
Tries from Ricardo Fourie, Jordan McLoughlin, Stephan Krugel, Logan Janeke (2), Jamain Dampies, and Gary Otto sealed the emphatic win, while Maties' only response came from Janlu Basson's single try and penalty.
This powerful semi-final performance, built on resilience, structure, and second-half dominance, secured the FNB NWU Eagles' place in the 2026 Varsity Cup final.
