VAR Outrage: Fulham Manager Blasts 'Toenail Too Big' for Chukwueze's Disallowed Goal
)
Fulham manager Marco Silva voiced his frustration, tinged with sarcasm, following a contentious VAR decision that led to a disallowed goal during his team's 2-1 Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage on Sunday. The loss marked another setback for the Cottagers, who had been hoping to rebound from a high-scoring 5-4 defeat to Manchester City earlier in the week.
The pivotal moment of the London derby arrived in the 53rd minute when Fulham believed they had taken the lead. Samuel Chukwueze initiated the attack with a cross from the left flank. Alex Iwobi met the cross, heading the ball onto the crossbar. Emile Smith-Rowe was quick to react, tapping in the rebound to spark celebrations among the home crowd. However, the jubilation was short-lived. A subsequent VAR review meticulously scrutinized the build-up, ultimately concluding that Chukwueze was marginally offside. The goal was consequently chalked off, leaving Fulham trailing.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Silva openly criticized the fine margins of the VAR call, expressing his disappointment. "I think we scored a brilliant goal, a very good combination," he stated. "It was a great moment for sure. It was going to boost ourselves." He continued with a sarcastic jab, "Of course, again, the goal was disallowed. Probably the toenail of Chukwueze is too big for the sport that we are playing. Now, another decision from the VAR against us."
The Portuguese manager admitted that the controversial decision significantly impacted his team's performance and morale. "After, the game was too tight. Not many chances, not for us, not for them. What we should have done differently was to move the ball quickly. Our possession in the back was too slow." Fulham struggled to regain their composure, failing to register another shot on target for the remainder of the game, ultimately conceding the winner to Marc Guehi in the 87th minute.
This defeat adds to Fulham's challenging run, marking their seventh loss in their last 10 Premier League matches, a statistic matching their joint-most in a 10-match stretch under Silva. The team currently sits in 15th place in the table, a precarious four points clear of the relegation zone. Adding to their woes, the Cottagers face the upcoming absence of crucial Nigerian players Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Samuel Chukwueze, who will depart for international duty, further complicating their immediate future. Silva acknowledged the importance of these players, stating, "They are crucial for us. Chukwueze is starting to have that impact. It is what it is; we knew it."
Despite the current difficulties, Fulham has a challenging series of upcoming fixtures against Burnley, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United, Crystal Palace, and Liverpool on New Year's Day.
