VAR Drama! Man City Dominates Newcastle, Piling Pressure on Arsenal in Title Race
)
Manchester City secured a vital 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium, cutting Premier League leaders Arsenal's advantage to just two points. The crucial win, which manager Pep Guardiola hailed as "massive," saw young midfielder Nico O'Reilly emerge as the hero, scoring both goals for the reigning champions.
The highly anticipated encounter began with a fervent atmosphere, intensified by Arsenal's recent draw against Wolves. Manchester City quickly took control, breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute. Following a fluid team move, Omar Marmoush drew the defense wide before delivering a clever pass to O'Reilly, who completed a perfectly timed overlapping run to unleash a powerful left-footed strike past Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Newcastle, however, responded swiftly, finding an equalizer just eight minutes later. Lewis Hall capitalized on a loose ball from a corner, firing a speculative effort that took a significant deflection off Rayan Aït-Nouri, leaving City's Gianluigi Donnarumma with no chance. City wasted no time in restoring their lead, with O'Reilly bagging his second goal of the night in the 27th minute. Erling Haaland turned provider, lofting a pinpoint cross to the back post where O'Reilly rose above Kieran Trippier to power a header into the far corner. Newcastle believed they had found a second equalizer before the break when Dan Burn headed home from a Sandro Tonali free-kick, but the goal was disallowed for a marginal offside decision.
Post-match, Guardiola emphasized the challenging nature of the win, stating, "Newcastle are an incredible team. That game today is what we are going to face in the next 11. Every game will be like that, a battle." He urged his players to focus solely on their upcoming fixture against Leeds, advising them to take a well-deserved break: "What you have to do is take a lot of caipirinhas and daiquiris in these next three days, enjoy life, and then we make proper sessions and go to Leeds. That is the proper way."
The City boss also highlighted the importance of fan support, noting, "The vibe and the connection with our fans today was the best of the season. We have five [home] games left in the Premier League and we need that vibe." O'Reilly echoed the sentiment, expressing satisfaction with the win and his goals, stating, "The win was the most important thing. Try to close the gap as well as apply as much pressure as possible, but [I'm] also very happy with the two goals. It's a lot of games to go, we just need to take each game as it comes."
The match was not without its moments of controversy, particularly regarding Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions, which are routinely scrutinized in the Premier League. Former Select Group referee Andy Davies provided expert insight into two major incidents from the game, explaining the VAR protocol and the Laws of the Game.
The first key incident occurred in the 42nd minute when Newcastle's Dan Burn headed home from a Sandro Tonali free-kick, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. Replays clearly indicated that Burn was in an offside position, but only because he was pushed by City defender Rúben Dias. VAR (James Bell) checked and cleared the on-field decision of no goal. The VAR review acknowledged Dias's clear and deliberate push. However, under Law 12, "Direct and indirect free kicks and penalty kicks can only be awarded for offences committed when the ball is in play." Since the ball had not been played by Tonali at the exact moment Dias pushed Burn, the ball was not active, preventing VAR from intervening for a foul. VAR has no jurisdiction to get involved without the ball in play, unless an act of violent conduct occurs, which was not the case here.
Davies’s verdict highlighted that while Newcastle players and supporters would understandably feel hard done by, Dias's action was a "calculated action by Dias and the City backline, who clearly understood the law and timed the push to perfection." Within the Laws of the Game, no offense could legally have been committed here, and only the referee on the field could have intervened to manage physical contact prior to the ball being in play.
Another contentious moment arose in the 51st minute concerning Manchester City's Bernardo Silva. Already cautioned, Silva appeared to jump into Burn without attempting to play the ball, raising questions about a potential second yellow card. However, the VAR did not view this as a possible red card challenge and, crucially, under current rules, VAR is unable to intervene in possible second yellow card situations; their jurisdiction is limited to straight red card decisions.
The verdict on Silva's challenge suggested that for a referee (Tom Bramall in this case) to issue a second yellow, the challenge needs to be unequivocally clear and immediately recognizable as such. While watching the clip in isolation, Silva was fortunate not to receive a second yellow for an unnecessary challenge, Davies concluded that in the context of a physical game, it wasn't a "standout moment" that would have caused the referee "too much discomfort in real time," indicating sensible game management by Bramall.
