Urgent Child Safety Alert: Mum's Son Hospitalized After Dangerous Anti-Spider Hack

A recent incident involving a two-year-old toddler has prompted a stark warning from a mother, Elessame, regarding the dangers of peppermint oil, a common household product often used as an anti-spider hack. Elessame shared her cautionary tale on TikTok after her son accidentally consumed even "the smallest drop" of the essential oil, leading to an unexpected overnight stay in the hospital.
Elessame recounted that she had purchased a bottle of peppermint oil from a high street store, intending to use it in a spray bottle as a natural deterrent for spiders around doors and skirting boards. Despite the bottle being almost empty, it still contained a minimal amount of oil. The incident occurred when the straw of the bottle briefly touched her son's lip, causing him to react instantly.
Upon realizing what had happened, Elessame immediately took action, brushing her son's teeth, providing him with water, and wiping the inside of his mouth to try and remove the oil. However, a quick online search revealed advice to contact the emergency department. She called 111, initially expecting to be told to monitor him at home, but was instead instructed to take him to her local A&E within the hour.
At the hospital, doctors performed heart rate and blood pressure checks, which showed readings lower than normal. Elessame was then informed that her son would need to remain in the hospital overnight. Medical professionals clarified that even a minuscule amount, such as one or two millilitres, of essential oils like peppermint oil is considered poisonous and toxic, particularly for children under the age of five.
Through her TikTok video, Elessame aimed to raise awareness among other parents, emphasizing that she was unaware such a "natural and organic" product could pose such a significant danger. She stressed the importance of keeping essential oils out of reach of young children, reiterating the sentiment that "Natural doesn’t always mean safe." Her story resonated with many parents in the comments section, who expressed gratitude for the warning, admitting they had no idea of the potential risks.
For those looking for safer alternatives to deter spiders, several options exist. These include ready-made spider repellent sprays, which are non-lethal, easy to use, and often have a pleasant smell. Another humane option is a spider vacuum, equipped with an LED light for spotting spiders in the dark, though caught spiders must be released immediately. Additionally, a spider catcher with a long handle allows individuals, especially those who are squeamish, to safely capture and dispose of spiders without injury or direct contact.
