A major recall of canned tuna products has been announced across nine U.S. states, following an earlier recall by Tri-Union Seafoods in February 2025. The recall stems from a packaging defect involving the “easy-open” pull tabs, which may compromise the seal over time. This can lead to leakage and contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for botulism, a serious and potentially life-threatening form of food poisoning.
The recall was prompted after a third-party distributor inadvertently shipped quarantined products to consumers, despite the initial recall and FDA-mandated quarantine. Authorities emphasize that consuming these products poses significant health risks, even if the cans appear intact or do not smell spoiled.
Recalled Products and Affected States
The recall specifically targets the following canned tuna products:
• Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil
• Size: 5.0 oz, four-pack
• UPC: 4800073265
• Can Codes: S84N D2L, S84N D3L
• Best-if-used-by dates: 1/21/2028, 1/24/2028
• Walmart Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil with Sea Salt
• Size: 5.0 oz
• UPC: 4800013275
• Can Code: S88N D1M
• Best-if-used-by date: 1/17/2028
The affected products were sold in multiple states:
• Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin: Meijer stores
• Maryland, Virginia: Giant Foods
• California: Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions
FDA Advisories and Consumer Guidance
The FDA strongly urges consumers to check their pantries for any of the recalled tuna. Consumers should not eat these products, regardless of appearance or smell. Recommended actions include:
• Returning the cans to the place of purchase for a full refund.
• Disposing of the products safely if a return is not possible.
For further assistance, consumers can contact Tri-Union Seafoods:

Those who experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, difficulty swallowing, or muscle weakness after consuming the recalled tuna should seek medical attention immediately.
