Under-Fire Liverpool Boss Arne Slot Vows to 'Fight On' Amid PSV Defeat Fallout
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has publicly committed to "fight on" with the club, despite his team enduring a dismal run of form that has seen them lose nine of their last 12 games. These affirmations came after conversations with Liverpool's hierarchy, which Slot described as consistent with discussions he has had since his arrival at Anfield. The recent 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League exacerbated the pressure, marking their third consecutive loss by a margin of three or more goals and representing the club's worst run in over 70 years.
When questioned about his discussions with sporting director Richard Hughes and other senior figures, Slot stated, "We have had the same conversations since I was here. We fight on, we try to improve -- that's what we all try. But the conversations have been the same as since I was here." Despite the team's struggles, Slot denied being angry with his players, though he conceded that the team's performance standards have fallen below expectations. He reiterated his belief in collective responsibility, stating that focus should remain on the team, regardless of whether performance is high or low.
Slot acknowledged the immense pressure associated with working at a top club, particularly when results are poor. He contrasted the current situation, marked by numerous losses, with the pressure faced last season to win the league. "We get knock after knock after knock, which is hard, but that is why I keep saying especially when that happens we have to keep fighting. That is what we have done so well last season and what this club has been about for so many years. That is what we expect," Slot emphasized, highlighting the club's historical resilience.
Adding to the current narrative, Slot had previously led Liverpool to their 20th league title in May and overseen significant spending in the summer, including a British record £125 million for Alexander Isak, totaling almost £450 million in new signings. Despite these investments and past successes, the reigning champions currently sit 12th in the Premier League after 12 matches, with an even record of six wins and six defeats. In the 36-team Champions League league phase, Liverpool are positioned 13th.
Looking ahead, Liverpool is set to travel to West Ham United for a Premier League clash on Sunday. The team could see a potential boost with the return of goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who missed the PSV match due to illness. Midfielder Florian Wirtz might also be available after recovering from a muscle injury, while striker Hugo Ekitike's availability will be assessed following a back problem sustained against PSV, as the Reds desperately seek to halt their alarming slide.
