Credited to scientist Alexander Fleming, this revolutionary substance transformed the treatment of infections, saving millions of lives worldwide. The coincidental nature of its discovery is striking: upon returning to his lab after a vacation, Fleming observed that one of his petri dishes had been contaminated by a stray mold.
