A truly unique and unforgettable encounter unfolded in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, involving a traveler, a juvenile gorilla, and a playful punch to the posterior. This surprising interaction, described as the "best moment of my entire life," occurred during a gorilla trek, a highlight of a stay at the newly opened Bisate Reserve. The resort, an extension of the successful Bisate Lodge, offers an unparalleled luxury experience intertwined with profound conservation efforts near the Congo border.
Wilderness, a renowned conservation and hospitality company, launched the Bisate Reserve in September, aiming to amplify the positive impact of its existing lodge. Manzi Kayihura, chairman of Wilderness Rwanda, emphasized that the Reserve builds upon its predecessor's success in reforestation, natural habitat restoration, employment, and community upliftment. While not necessarily elevating luxury above the already opulent Bisate Lodge, the Reserve was designed to enhance the guest experience, particularly by offering the "luxury of space." This means larger rooms, increased lounge square footage, and dedicated areas for in-room dining and spa treatments, catering to guests who prefer the comfort of their private villa, especially after strenuous gorilla trekking.
Upon arrival, guests are met with exceptional hospitality, guided through a volcanic rock driveway to the main lodge. This communal area is a near-perfect replica of a royal Rwandan residence, featuring a towering thatched roof, a central crackling fireplace, and an emerald-green bar adorned with a gleaming glass chandelier that mirrors the surrounding volcano landscape. The true marvel, however, lies in the four en-suite villas, each designed to elicit awe.
Stepping into a villa reveals a massive mudroom, essential for de-gearing after a hike, where staff assist in cleaning equipment. This leads into a luxurious main lounge area complete with a full kitchen stocked with treats, a plush seating arrangement facing a fireplace, and a well-appointed bar. The bedroom boasts a second roaring fireplace, a soaking tub, and a rainfall shower, alongside a spacious closet. The highlight of the private outdoor terrace is a woodburning hot tub offering breathtaking views of the verdant hillside. This meticulous attention to detail and tribute to Rwandan culture aims to provide guests with a truly unique experience.
The Bisate Reserve team meticulously plans every aspect of the gorilla trek, from securing permits and providing packing lists to guiding guests to experienced trackers and welcoming them back with post-hike cocktails. Treks involve hiking deep into the forest, with guides like John leading the way, clearing paths, and ensuring a safe, respectful encounter. Guests are required to mask up to protect the gorillas, who share 98 percent of human DNA, from potential viruses. The experience allows for 60 minutes of silent observation, watching families interact, nurse, play, and forage, fostering a deep connection with these magnificent creatures. Beyond the awe-inspiring wildlife encounters, the experience also serves a broader purpose: promoting a positive image of Rwanda post-genocide, as echoed by guides and management alike.
Guests are invited to participate in the conservation mission by planting indigenous trees, a symbolic gesture creating a lasting connection to the land and contributing to the reforestation of the 103 acres of former agricultural land. These efforts have already seen 100,000 indigenous trees replanted, encouraging wildlife return. The resort also focuses on community sustainability through partnerships and job creation, striving to transcend luxury hospitality with a profound commitment to conservation.
The Reserve offers more than just gorilla treks. Activities include golden monkey outings, guided nature walks through the private forest, birding, visits to the on-site nursery to meet agronomists and plant trees, and tours of the vegetable garden. Guests can also enjoy sundowners, community walks, or visits to the Dian Fossey gravesite or the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. While there's no dedicated spa, in-room treatments like a post-hike foot massage are readily available. For families, Villas 1 and 2 can be interlinked, and complimentary childcare is provided for children under 15 during gorilla treks. The resort prioritizes accessibility, offering buggy assistance, though some mobility is required. Stays at Bisate Reserve are fully inclusive, with rates varying seasonally, offering a comprehensive and impactful luxury African adventure.
