Ukraine Offensive Surges: Kyiv Reclaims Vast Territory and Key Settlements in Southeast

Ukraine's military command has announced the liberation of 26 settlements in an extensive operation spanning over six months, centered around Oleksandrivka in southeastern Ukraine. This significant push saw 12 settlements reclaimed in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, 10 in the Donetsk region, and four in the Zaporizhzhia region. Kyiv authorities stated that this counteroffensive in the Oleksandrivka direction was strategically designed to counter Russia's spring-summer offensive and expel Russian forces from the Dnipropetrovsk region, an area Russia had sought to establish as a buffer zone.

According to the Ukrainian Airborne Assault Forces Command, Ukrainian troops successfully liberated more than 745 square kilometers of territory. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which monitors the conflict through open-source mapping, presented a more conservative estimate, reporting approximately 626.69 square kilometers liberated across the Oleksandrivka direction and the northern edge of the adjacent Hulyaipole sector. However, ISW acknowledged that its methodology "likely underestimates Ukrainian advances."

ISW analysts interpreted this operation as compelling evidence that Ukraine retains the capability to execute coordinated, mechanized counterattacks, even after more than four years of predominantly static, attritional warfare. The US-based think tank attributed these gains to several mutually reinforcing factors. These include the maturation of the Ukrainian command's operational planning, a sustained and effective campaign to suppress and destroy Russian air-defense systems, an intensifying mid-range strike campaign targeting Russian logistics, Ukraine's significant advantage in tactical drone warfare, and the abrupt cutoff of Starlink connectivity for Russian units operating inside Ukraine on February 1st.

The fighting near Oleksandrivka has also generated wider strategic implications, according to ISW. It has compelled Moscow to make difficult choices, either bolstering its defenses in the Oleksandrivka sector or diverting critical troops and equipment to other offensive operations further along the front line. This dilemma is further exacerbated by Russia's declining recruitment rates. In a comparative analysis, ISW calculated that across the entire front line during the same six-and-a-half-month period, Russian forces ceded approximately 233.74 square kilometers of ground, while managing to seize or infiltrate only 382.98 square kilometers of new territory. This disparity, ISW concluded, underscores the remarkable nature of Ukraine's localized success near Oleksandrivka.
