UK National Security Rocked: China Spy Claims Spark Royal Navy Scandal

A Royal Navy captain in command of one of Britain’s nuclear-armed submarines has stepped back from his duties amid an investigation into his relationship with MP Joani Reid. This development comes as Reid’s husband, David Taylor, faces serious allegations of spying for China. The married senior officer was subject to a navy investigation last year following contact with Reid that involved messages described as "inappropriate" or "flirtatious," prompting an assessment of a potential blackmail risk.
The internal investigation, initiated as a matter of "due diligence," found that the pair had exchanged messages but concluded that the officer had not broken any military rules. Despite withdrawing from his duties this week, reportedly for personal reasons, he has not left the service. It is understood that the captain and Ms. Reid had known each other prior to her becoming a Labour MP in 2024. Sources close to Ms. Reid have rejected claims that the messages were flirtatious.
Separately, Joani Reid, the MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven, reportedly stepped down from the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme (AFPS) following concerns about her conduct during a visit to HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane, the home of Britain’s nuclear weapons. During a trip last year, she allegedly behaved inappropriately towards a senior naval officer after becoming heavily intoxicated during an evening in the officers' mess. Another MP who was on the visit reported Ms. Reid’s alleged behavior to parliamentary authorities. This decision was reportedly made out of fear that sensitive information about Britain’s nuclear capabilities could end up in enemy hands. However, a senior figure was quoted as saying they were satisfied there was "no link" at all to the China spy case.
These revelations are set against the backdrop of the arrest of Ms. Reid’s husband, David Taylor. Mr. Taylor was arrested last month, along with two other men, Matthew Aplin (43) and Steve Jones (68), on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service, specifically for China. These arrests were carried out under the National Security Act. Mr. Taylor, a former special adviser to Labour peer Peter Hain and a lobbyist with Earthcott, denies the allegations. Following his arrest, fresh security checks were conducted, and Ms. Reid voluntarily resigned the Labour whip while an investigation is carried out, though she insists she has done "nothing wrong."
Ms. Reid has vehemently denied any involvement in her husband’s alleged activities, stating, "Neither I nor my children are part of this investigation and we should not be treated by media organisations as though we are." She further asserted, "As far as I am aware I have never met any Chinese businesses whilst I have been an MP, any Chinese diplomats or government employees, nor raised any concern with ministers or anyone else on behalf of, even coincidentally, Chinese interests." Regarding the report of her alleged inappropriate behavior at Faslane, which predates her husband's arrest, a source close to Ms. Reid described the claims as "opportunistic hypocrisy," highlighting the nearly year-long gap between the events and the report and suggesting a gender bias, stating, "many of the male MPs attending had plenty to drink, too, but only the woman is reported. Not hard to see what the real force behind this is."
The Royal Navy has issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to security: "The security of the nuclear deterrent is our highest priority, and we have robust processes in place to protect the security of our people and capabilities. We will not comment on individual cases." The Ministry of Defence is reportedly confident there has been no breach of security following further checks after Mr. Taylor's arrest. Mr. Taylor and the two other individuals arrested were released on bail as police continue their inquiries.
