UDS Dominates 2025 World University Games, Ministry Praises Historic Football Triumph

The University for Development Studies (UDS) football team has achieved a monumental triumph, securing the championship title at the 2025 World University Games in Dalian, China. This historic victory, which saw UDS defeat defending champions Paulista University of Brazil in a hard-fought 2-1 final, has drawn widespread praise, including heartfelt congratulations from the Ministry of Education.
The final match, witnessed by nearly 23,000 fervent fans, began dramatically with UDS trailing within the first 30 seconds. Gabriel Viera of Paulista University capitalized on a defensive lapse, cleverly lobbing goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo to give his team an early lead. Despite this initial setback, Ibrahim Tanko’s UDS squad quickly asserted control, dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities, though lacking the decisive final touch. The Ghanaians’ persistence, however, eventually paid off in stoppage time. Frimpong skillfully dribbled past Silva, forcing a save that rebounded kindly to captain Asigre Sulemana, who made no mistake from close range in the 93rd minute, leveling the score and sending the intense contest into extra time.
UDS maintained their relentless pressure in the additional period, but Paulista’s goalkeeper, Silva, produced a string of crucial saves to keep his side in contention. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 121st minute from a corner taken by Ezedeen Alhassan. Silva struggled to deal with the difficult delivery, and the ball slipped through his grasp into the net, securing a dramatic late goal for UDS. This stunning turnaround sparked wild celebrations from the UDS bench, led by Coach Tanko. Paulista, visibly stunned, lost possession immediately after the restart, and the referee's final whistle moments later crowned UDS as the new champions, dethroning Paulista University, who had won the tournament two years prior.
In a press statement, the Ministry of Education lauded UDS for this "outstanding victory," highlighting the team's performance as a shining example of discipline, resilience, teamwork, and excellence. This win is particularly significant as it marks the first time an African university has lifted the prestigious global trophy, establishing a landmark moment for both Ghana and the entire continent. The Ministry emphasized that with "unity of purpose and unwavering determination, great heights can be attained," noting that "Every pass, every goal, and every sacrifice on the field reflected not only your pursuit of victory but also the spirit of Ghana and the enduring character of our people.”
Beyond the athletic achievement, the Ministry recognized the broader impact of UDS’s success, stating that it has elevated the image of African higher education and talent on the global stage. By becoming the first African institution to win the University World Cup, UDS has blazed a trail for other African universities and inspired a new generation of student-athletes. The Ministry called the triumph "a beacon of hope and inspiration to young people everywhere," demonstrating that "hard work, perseverance, and vision can break barriers and set new standards of excellence.”
The victory has ignited celebrations across Ghana, with the UDS team receiving widespread commendation for their achievement. Key national leaders, including Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, publicly praised the team, echoing the sentiment that "This victory is a triumph for UDS and the entire nation.” The Ministry of Education reiterated its pride in UDS’s historic accomplishment and pledged its continued support for student sports across Ghanaian universities, celebrating UDS for making history for Ghana and Africa.
