True Detective Shocker! Nicolas Cage & Antonio Banderas Join Season 5 Cast

Antonio Banderas has officially joined Nicolas Cage in the highly anticipated fifth season of HBO's critically acclaimed anthology series, “True Detective.” The two prominent actors are set to headline the next installment, which is slated to commence production in 2027. This marks a significant development for the series, bringing together two celebrated talents for a new chapter.

Issa López, who garnered widespread praise for her work on the Alaska-set fourth season, “Night Country” (starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis), will return as showrunner, writer, and director for Season 5. The upcoming season will shift its setting from the icy landscapes of Alaska to the distinct locale of Jamaica Bay, New York. Few specific character details have been disclosed, but Banderas will portray Rai García, while Cage will take on the role of Henry Logan.

The list of executive producers for Season 5 is extensive, including López, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, and the lead actors themselves, Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas. They are joined by Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto (the series creator), Cary Joji Fukunaga, and past lead actors Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, underscoring the high-profile nature of the production.

“True Detective” has a storied history of critical success, having received 41 Emmy nominations and winning six, with accolades for actors like Harrelson, McConaughey, Mahershala Ali, and Jodie Foster. HBO reported that Season 4, “Night Country,” was the most-watched installment to date, drawing 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, setting a high bar for the upcoming season.

Regarding connections to the previous season, showrunner Issa López revealed that there will be “important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new [season].” However, she emphasized that Season 5 will still present a new story with new characters.

Both Banderas and Cage bring formidable résumés to the series. Antonio Banderas is known for acclaimed roles in the Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony,” the Nicole Kidman-led “Babygirl,” and his iconic performances in “The Mask of Zorro” and “The Legend of Zorro.” He is also the voice of Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise. This will be a rare regular television role for Banderas, whose last major TV turn was playing Pablo Picasso in the 2018 series “Genius.” Nicolas Cage, best recognized for films such as “Pig,” “Dream Scenario,” “Leaving Las Vegas,” and “National Treasure,” is making his second lead television appearance after starring in the dark superhero series “Spider-Noir.”

Banderas is represented by NuCo Media Group and Greenberg Glusker, while Cage is represented by WME, Stride Management, and attorney Patrick Knapp.
