Transatlantic Clash: Liverpool and Wrexham Set for Yankee Stadium Showdown in July
Wrexham AFC, co-owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, is scheduled to undertake its third United States preseason tour in July, highlighted by a significant match against Liverpool at Yankee Stadium in New York. This tour is part of the Welsh club's ongoing strategy to expand its reach within the U.S. market, building on previous visits in 2023 and 2024. The 2023 tour saw Wrexham famously defeat Manchester United, while in 2024, Chelsea required a late equalizer to secure a draw against them. July's fixture will mark a historic first for Wrexham, as they play at the iconic home of the New York Yankees.
Manager Phil Parkinson expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming trip, stating, "We are all looking forward to returning to the US as part of our pre-season preparations." He highlighted the tremendous support the team has received on previous American tours and conveyed eagerness to reconnect with supporters while facing "three quality opponents" – Leeds United, Sunderland, and Liverpool – in matches crucial for preparing for the 2026/27 campaign. Intriguingly, Wrexham might even journey to the U.S. as a Premier League club, given their strong performance in England's second tier. Parkinson's side currently holds sixth place in the Championship standings, enjoying a three-game winning streak that has propelled them four points clear of Southampton, their closest competitor for the final playoff spot.
The upcoming match against Liverpool will be their first encounter in nearly two decades, with their last friendly taking place at the Racecourse Ground in 2007. The last competitive fixture between the two clubs dates back to 1978, a League Cup match where a Kenny Dalglish hat-trick secured a 3-1 victory for Liverpool. The tour schedule for Wrexham includes their opening game against Leeds United at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on July 25. The highly anticipated match against Liverpool at Yankee Stadium will follow four days later, on July 29. Wrexham will conclude their series on August 2 with a game against Sunderland at Subaru Park in Philadelphia, Rob McElhenney's hometown, which is also the home of Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union. Separately, Liverpool's tour itinerary includes a match against Sunderland at Nashville's GEODIS Park on July 25, culminating their U.S. series with a game against Leeds United at Soldier Field in Chicago on August 2.
