Tragedy Strikes as Anthony Joshua's Convoy Involved in Fatal Ogun Crash

World boxing champion Anthony Joshua is recuperating in a hospital following a fatal road traffic accident that occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday. The midday incident involved a Toyota Lexus jeep conveying Joshua and three other passengers. Tragically, two passengers, identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu (36), a Nigerian/British citizen also known as Latif 'Latz', and Gami Sina (36), a British citizen also known as Sina Evolve, lost their lives. Joshua sustained minor injuries and was reported to be in stable condition.
The Ogun State Government promptly confirmed the incident and expressed its condolences to the bereaved families. Governor Dapo Abiodun, upon learning of the accident, visited the hospital where Joshua was receiving treatment. He was later joined by Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Both governors remained at the hospital for several hours, overseeing the situation and ensuring appropriate medical care was provided for the boxing champion. Governor Abiodun stated they personally monitored Joshua’s treatment for over seven hours.
Other senior officials who visited the hospital included the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Mr Bukola Olopade, who offered institutional and professional support. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, was fully briefed on the incident. Government sources confirmed the President spoke separately with Anthony Joshua, his mother, and Governor Abiodun, conveying his sympathies and condolences. The British High Commission was formally notified and officials, including Deputy Head of Mission Mr Simon Field, visited the hospital, remaining in contact with local authorities and the deceased's families.
Condolences for British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua and the families of the deceased poured in from various quarters. His promoters, Matchroom Boxing, confirmed the deaths of AbdulLateef Ayodele and Sina Ghami, describing them as “integral” to Joshua’s team. Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn expressed profound sadness. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described the incident as a “tragic loss that has cast a shadow over the season,” extending deep sympathies and praying for strength and recovery. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun also expressed their sadness and offered prayers.
