Tragedy & Scandal: Chimamanda Adichie Accuses Lagos Hospital of Negligence in Son's Death

Renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has publicly accused Euracare Multispecialist Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, of medical negligence, attributing the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, to an incident at the facility on January 6, 2026. Adichie firmly states that her son would still be alive if not for the events that transpired at Euracare.
The incident occurred while Adichie and her family were in Lagos for Christmas. Nkanu initially suffered from what was believed to be a cold, which quickly escalated into a serious infection, leading to his admission at Atlantis Hospital. Nkanu was scheduled to travel to the United States the following day, January 7, accompanied by specialized traveling doctors, with a medical team at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore prepared to receive him. The Johns Hopkins team had requested a lumbar puncture and an MRI. Additionally, the Nigerian medical team decided to insert a 'central line' (used for administering IV medications) in preparation for the flight. Atlantis Hospital subsequently referred the family to Euracare Hospital, citing it as the best facility for these specific procedures.
On the morning of January 6, the family proceeded from Atlantis Hospital to Euracare, with Nkanu being carried by his father. They were informed that Nkanu would require sedation to ensure he remained still during the MRI and central line procedure. Adichie recounted waiting outside the theater when she observed medical staff, including a Dr. M, rushing into the room, immediately signaling that something had gone wrong. She claims her son was administered an excessive amount of propofol by the anesthesiologist and was not properly monitored during the procedure. Dr. M later informed Adichie that Nkanu had been given too much propofol, experienced seizures, and then suffered cardiac arrest. He was intubated, placed on a ventilator, and moved to the ICU, but tragically passed away hours later.
Adichie vehemently condemned the anesthesiologist, labeling their actions as
