Tragedy in Kogi: Teacher Beaten to Death by Student's Father, Police Probe Intensifies

The Kogi State Police Command has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the tragic death of Maryam Usman, a 30-year-old primary school teacher, who reportedly died following an alleged assault in the Olamaboro Local Government Area of the state. The incident unfolded after Maryam disciplined a pupil at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, during which the child reportedly fell and sustained an arm injury.

According to preliminary investigations by the police, on June 18, 2026, one Abdullahi Ishaka, identified as the pupil's father, accompanied by two women, went to the school and allegedly assaulted Maryam Usman. Sources further indicated that additional individuals attacked Maryam again later the same day while she was on her way to the mosque.

Following the assaults, Maryam sustained serious injuries. She was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for more specialized medical attention. Despite these efforts, she tragically passed away on June 25, 2026.

The spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, SP Oyiza Salisu Afusat, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, June 28, 2026. She stated that a case of culpable homicide was officially reported at the Olamaboro Divisional Headquarters on June 25, 2026. Police operatives visited the scene of the incident and the deceased’s residence to carry out necessary documentation. Arrangements are currently being made to convey Maryam Usman's corpse to the General Hospital, Ankpa, for a thorough medical examination and autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.

Authorities disclosed that the suspects involved in the alleged assault fled the scene before police officers arrived. Efforts are vigorously ongoing to apprehend them. Once the suspects are arrested, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet and comprehensive investigation, ensuring that justice is served. This shocking development has sparked considerable outrage and has renewed serious concerns over the safety of teachers and the increasing disregard for educators in society.
