Toyota's New bZ EV Series: A Game Changer for 2026?

The 2026 Toyota bZ undergoes a significant midcycle refresh, bringing a new name, enhanced powertrain, improved range, and a refined design, aiming to address previous criticisms and become a more competitive offering in the electric SUV segment. The most notable change is the name, which simplifies from "bZ4X" to just "bZ," although Toyota's "Beyond Zero" nomenclature for electrified vehicles has been quietly shelved. This refresh is considered a notable improvement over its predecessor.
A core update lies in the powertrain, which now features a slightly larger 74.7-kWh battery pack in higher trims, an increase from the prior 71.4 kWh. A new, smaller 57.7-kWh pack is introduced for the base model, yet it still delivers more range than the previous base version. New permanent-magnet motors are teamed with these batteries to provide more power, whether in front- or all-wheel drive configurations. All-wheel-drive models now boast a combined 338 horsepower, making the bZ feel significantly more eager and refined. Toyota claims a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds for AWD models, but testing revealed an even quicker 4.4 seconds for the XLE AWD variant. For front-wheel-drive models, the base XLE makes 168 horsepower, while the XLE FWD Plus or Limited FWD offer a more respectable 221 horsepower, suitable for daily driving.
Range, a previous "sore spot" compared to rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, has seen substantial improvements. The 2026 bZ now offers a range of 235 to 314 miles, up from the previous 222 to 252 miles. Despite these improvements, real-world efficiency still presents a challenge, with an XLE AWD test car rated for 288 miles achieving only 213 miles on a 70-mph Road Trip Range test. Another welcome upgrade is the adoption of the North American Charging Standard (NACS), also known as the Tesla port, replacing the CCS plug for easier charging.
Visually, the 2026 Toyota bZ also receives a significant aesthetic enhancement. The awkward black body panels that previously contributed to a bulky and unusual front-end appearance have been replaced with body-color panels. This change results in a sleeker, cleaner, and more polished design, moving away from its predecessor's less attractive look. These collective upgrades make the new bZ a far more compelling choice than before, positioning it to better compete in the fiercely competitive electric SUV segment.
