Tottenham in Turmoil: Relegation Fears Surge After Crushing Defeat & Star Injury!
Tottenham Hotspur is facing a stark reality following their 1-0 defeat to Sunderland in the Premier League, which has left them in the relegation zone for the first time this late in the season.
The loss at the Stadium of Light marked a grim start for new Spurs coach Roberto De Zerbi, who has inherited a team grappling with a severe crisis.
The crucial blow came in the 61st minute when Nordi Mukiele scored with a deflected left-footed strike off Micky van de Ven, leaving goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky with no chance.
This defeat was Tottenham's 16th in the Premier League this season and extended their winless streak in the league to 105 days, encompassing 14 matches. This represents their longest such run since 1935, a year in which the club was ultimately relegated.
Adding to Tottenham's woes, defender Cristian Romero left the field in tears after sustaining an injury in the second half.
The Argentina international limped off after a collision with his own goalkeeper, Antonín Kinsky, where Sunderland's Brian Brobbey pushed Romero, causing his knee to collide with Kinsky's face.
While Kinsky was able to continue with a bandaged head, Romero was visibly distressed and unable to play on, raising concerns for Argentina ahead of the World Cup in June.
De Zerbi expressed his hope that the injury was not severe, acknowledging Romero as a "crucial player" and a "big personality" needed for the remainder of the season.
Post-match, Roberto De Zerbi candidly admitted that the "fear of relegation" is significantly impacting his players. Despite his own extensive experience, he remains positive due to his knowledge of the players' quality. De Zerbi stressed that the immediate target is to "win one game" to change the team's perspective and break the negative cycle.
He believes the crucial part of his coaching style is the mental aspect, focusing on transferring confidence and helping players perform in games as they do in training, acknowledging that during matches, their heads are not always "clean."
De Zerbi's tactical approach involved some continuity with previous styles, such as drawing on the attacking, dynamic spirit of Ange Postecoglou's era, with fullbacks like Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie inverting and pushing forward.
He also made brave team selections, starting Randal Kolo Muani, Dominic Solanke, and Richarlison together for the first time. However, he spoke that now is not the time for radical change, but rather a focus on mentality.
The team's inability to cope with setbacks is evident, as they have failed to win any of their last 33 league games when conceding first. Despite being UEFA Europa League winners previously, their league position has declined from 17th last season to 18th currently.
With six games remaining in the season, Tottenham is two points behind 17th-placed West Ham, and time is rapidly running out for De Zerbi to instill the necessary mental fortitude and secure a crucial victory. The specter of relegation, last experienced in 1977, looms large over the club.
