Tottenham Fires Thomas Frank: Fan Fury and Relegation Fears Erupt
Thomas Frank has been dismissed as Tottenham Hotspur's head coach, the club confirmed on Wednesday, marking the end of his eight-month tenure. The decision came as Spurs languished in 16th place in the Premier League, following a 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United on Tuesday. Frank, who was appointed in June 2025, faced growing discontent from fans, including chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" and calls for former manager Mauricio Pochettino.
A club statement clarified the decision: "The club has taken the decision to make a change in the Men's Head Coach position and Thomas Frank will leave today." While acknowledging the initial determination to provide him time and support to build for the future, the board concluded that "results and performances have led the board to conclude that a change at this point in the season is necessary." The statement also thanked Frank for his "unwavering commitment" and wished him future success.
Sources indicated that chief executive Vinai Venkatesham recommended the decision to the ownership after Tottenham's dreadful run of form continued, culminating in another "toxic evening" at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The club had been reluctant to make a change, recognizing that many issues predated Frank and he had been unfortunate to contend with a high volume of injuries, often boasting a list of 10 unavailable players due to injury or suspension. However, the board felt compelled to act as Tottenham are now in danger of relegation, sitting just five points above the drop zone.
Frank's statistical performance underpinned the club's drastic decision. Under his leadership, Spurs secured only two wins in their last 17 Premier League matches, collecting a mere 11 points during this period. The current eight-game winless run is the club's longest in the Premier League since October 2008. His average of 1.12 points-per-game (29 points in 26 games) is the lowest rate of any manager in the club's history with five or more games in the competition, resulting in a 27% win percentage, the worst for a Spurs manager since 2008. Furthermore, Spurs are winless in 24 straight Premier League games when trailing at half-time and have failed to win any of their last 27 matches when conceding first in the Premier League, a streak dating back to a victory over Aston Villa in November 2024.
Despite his poor league form, Frank did guide Spurs to the Champions League round-of-16 after finishing fourth in the group stage. However, their cup campaigns were cut short with defeats in the EFL Cup fourth round to Newcastle and the FA Cup third round to Aston Villa. The negative atmosphere at the stadium was compounded by off-field issues, including captain Cristian Romero criticizing the club's hierarchy on social media post-transfer window closure.
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust welcomed Frank's dismissal but expressed concerns about the timing, questioning why the decision was made only after the closure of the January transfer window. They emphasized the need for "serious financial investment in the squad" and called for "strong leadership at every level of the club to restore belief and direction." The Trust demanded a "clear long-term plan built around attacking football" that prioritizes stability, a clear footballing identity, and the resources to compete for Champions League places and win trophies regularly.
Frank's departure marks the first sacking of the post-Daniel Levy era, following Levy's exit in September 2025 when the family of billionaire Joe Lewis, majority owners of Spurs' holding company Enic, took on a more prominent role. While an interim appointment is considered likely at this initial stage, the club has yet to decide on a long-term replacement plan. Frank's tenure, which followed Ange Postecoglou's (July 2023 to June 2025) mixed spell that included a Europa League win but a 17th-place league finish, will be remembered as one of the least successful in the club's recent history.
