Tom Hardy Returns! Venom Roars Back to the Big Screen in New Movie!

Two years after its supposed trilogy capper, Venom: The Last Dance, the iconic Spider-Man anti-hero Venom is set to return in an all-new animated feature film. Sony Pictures Animation is currently developing the project, with Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, known for their work on Final Destination: Bloodlines, slated to direct and produce. While details remain scarce, Tom Hardy, who portrayed Eddie Brock in the live-action trilogy, is also confirmed to return, though his specific role – whether as a voice actor, producer, or advisor – is yet to be clarified.
The animated venture maintains strong ties to the original live-action films, with familiar names like Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach, all of whom produced the previous movies, returning as producers for this new installment. Although the directors have been secured, a writer for the project has not yet been named, though Sony Pictures Animation has initiated a writers' room to explore potential story ideas for the alien symbiote.
The character of Eddie Brock's Venom, as widely known, was co-created by David Michelinie and Todd McFarlane, making his proper debut in Amazing Spider-Man comics in 1988, following the symbiote's initial introduction in 1984. Over the years, Venom has evolved from a formidable supervillain to an anti-hero, a portrayal embraced in the Tom Hardy-led films. These films have collectively garnered over $1.8 billion at the global box office, marking a significant success story for Sony's cinematic adaptations of the Spider-Man universe, even as later installments experienced a slowdown in the broader comic book movie market.
Sony Pictures Animation, celebrated for its critically acclaimed Spider-Verse trilogy by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, which is set to conclude with Beyond the Spider-Verse, appears to be the ideal banner to inject new life into the Venom franchise. The previous film, Venom: The Last Dance, released on October 25, 2024, with a runtime of 110 minutes, directed by Kelly Marcel and written by Marcel and Tom Hardy, ended with the symbiote seemingly sacrificing itself. However, hints, such as a post-credits cockroach, suggested Venom's potential survival and a future reunion with Eddie Brock. The film also introduced additional symbiote allies and the formidable Knull, the 'King in Black,' played by Andy Serkis, a character whose promised return as a major threat has yet to be explored.
Lipovsky and Stein bring a promising track record to the project. Their revitalization of the Final Destination franchise with Bloodlines earned rave reviews, the best in the series' history, and achieved a box office success of over $315 million. They have also partnered with Chris Columbus for a new installment of the horror-comedy Gremlins, signaling high expectations for their ability to reinvigorate storied characters and properties in Hollywood. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned to Collider for further updates on the Venom animated movie as production commences.
